Training Manual

The Peace and Development Partnerships team is pleased to announce the publication of its Environmental Peacebuilding Training Manual, which focuses on increasing awareness, knowledge and skills on environmental peacebuilding among conservation practitioners and organizations working in areas affected by conflict or where conservation efforts could potentially impact conflict.

The five modules are designed to build the capacity of CI's staff and partners to better respond to conflict and capitalize on opportunities to support peacebuilding in the communities where we work.

Introduction

             Introduction to the Manual

The introduction to this manual  provides context on the link between conflict, conservation, and peace--establishing the relevance of environmental peacebuilding to CI's work.  This section describes the purpose of this manual, how it aligns with CI's Rights-based Approach, and the objectives of the five modules.
    Module 1:
   Peace and Conservation

The first module provides a basic introduction to the role of natural resources and the environment in contributing to conflict and peacebuilding. It  introduces terminology used in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, key components of environmental peacebuilding and applications at different stages of the conflict cycle.
      Module 2:
     Stakeholder Engagement

Recognizing that stakeholder engagement is a necessary component of environmental peacebuilding, the second module describes the basic principles for undertaking broad-based, participatory and transparent processes that encourage meaningful participation and consent across environmental peacebuilding activities.

Module 3:

The third module  equips CI staff and partners to better understand the context in which they work in order to inform response strategies and conflict-sensitive programming. It presents three conflict analysis tools to identify and understand the factors that drive or mitigate conflict, map the roles of stakeholders involved and identify the processes and institutions supporting peace.

          Module 4:
     Increasing Conflict Sensitivity
   in Conservation

The fourth module provides a basic introduction to the role of natural resources and the environment in contributing to conflict and peacebuilding. It  introduces terminology used in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, key components of environmental peacebuilding and applications at different stages of the conflict cycle.

       Module 5:
     Collaborative Consensus Building

The fifth module teaches a five-step process for building consensus
among conflict parties, emphasizing the use of advanced communication skills and collaborative consensus building techniques. As a type of conflict resolution process, collaborative consensus building is particularly applicable within an environmental peacebuilding context because it is a participatory approach that engages diverse stakeholders in developing a mutually agreeable solution.
