It is 320-square mile watershed contains more than 30 lakes and ponds and about 55 miles of streams.
The Sheepscot River runs through Alna, Newcastle, Whitefield and Palermo and drains into the Atlantic Ocean. Along the river, streams such as Marsh River/ Deer Meadow Marsh enter into the Sheepscot river, creating estuaries for threatened and endangered species can hide and grow.
The river is supervised by the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association (SVCA), which is a non-profit land trust and advocacy group. The SVCA works hard to conserve the watershed and help the community to build a good relationship with the surrounding wildlife.
Along the river, there are many spots for recreation such as kayaking and hiking. The SVCA help the nearby towns to create eco-friendly hiking trails while educating the public the importance of keeping one of Maine's precious watersheds pristine.
