Color Violeta  -  A Tribute to Violeta Parra

Join us October 19th as we celebrate the life of the beloved Chilean singer-songwriter, ethnomusicologist, visual artist and cultural icon, Violeta Parra, with a band dedicated to honouring her musical legacy.

In 2010, Color Violeta’s director, Daniel Emden, was awarded a Vivacité grant by the Quebec Council of Arts and Letters to develop the group’s first EP, Gracias, which was released during their performance as part of the Bicentenary of Chile’s Independence. Gracias is named after Parra’s celebrated song “Gracias a la Vida” (Thanks to Life) - the most translated song of all times, sung in more than 36 different languages!

Color Violeta’s performances fuse rhythms such as the cueca, tonada, Afro-Peruvian festejo, huayno and chacarera with jazz creating music that is modern and original, yet respectful of its roots.

EL TRABAJO DE ALFREDO JAAR IN TORONTO:

Alfredo Jaar: The Politics of Images
January 23 – April 14, 2013
Curator: Dr. Gaëlle Morel
Ryerson University Gallery
33 GOULD STREET, TORONTO, ONTARIO

Focusing on human rights, the Chilean-born, New York-based artist addresses political concerns and the relationship between ethics and aesthetics.
His œuvre highlights ignored contemporary tragedies, such as genocides, epidemics and famines, and promotes cultural change.

In his works “Searching for Africa in Life” (1996) and “From Time to Time” (2006), Alfredo Jaar displays covers of news magazines to analyze the lack of visibility and the visual clichés about Africa disseminated in Western culture.

The artist’s three-channel video “We Wish to Inform You That We Didn’t Know” (2010), his most recent project on the genocide in Rwanda, acts as an epilogue to “The Rwanda Project, 1994-2000”, a series of twenty-five artworks developed to critique the world’s indifference and inaction to this mass murder.

Alfredo Jaar: The Politics of Images is made possible with the generous support of the artist.

INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT ON THE MAPUCHE NATION

Each year, imagineNATIVE’s International Spotlight highlights the work of Indigenous filmmakers from around the world. This showcase allows us the opportunity to screen and video works new to Canada and give voice to artists, places and cultures not often seen or heard. As programmers, we are always amazed – and heartened – to see that despite our incredible diversity as Indigenous peoples, we share experiences that transcend geographical and ethnic boundaries. Ours is an Indigenous experience that unites us and speaks volumes about who we are as global citizens.

This year, imagineNATIVE presents two screenings of documentary works by Mapuche artists. The Mapuche nation is one of South America’s largest and whose territory exists predominantly in southern
Chile and into Argentina. Comprising almost a million citizens, the Mapuche have unique struggles in their homeland that are often addressed in their media works. Not unlike many Indigenous filmmakers in Latin America, much of their work is comprised of social activist documentaries, providing much-needed Indigenous perspectives in a socio-political context where their voices are often discredited or silenced.

The works presented this year reveal strong, interrelated themes of culture, land and resistance, in particular to the rise of mining and forestry on their traditional territories, including many run by Canadian multi-nationals. The relationship between the Mapuche and corporate and federal interests is often fraught with conflicts and disagreements. A significant, contentious issue surrounds Chile’s anti-terrorism laws which many Mapuche believe exist to suppress their protests and stunt their quest for land reclamation.

Four documentary works are presented as part of this year’s Spotlight and, while not conclusive, provide an engaging overview of the realities of Mapuche in contemporary South American society and their vibrant culture. The Spotlight’s two screenings are accompanied by a panel that explores the challenges and opportunities of Indigenous filmmaking in Latin America.

En El Nombre del Progresso

Directed by:

Danko Mariman

Who defines the notion of –progress”? For many Mapuche living in the AraucanÍa region in southern Chile, the capitalist understanding - and aggressive pursuit - of progress is at odds with their ways of life and wishes. Produced and funded exclusively by the filmmaker, this is grassroots, activist documentary filmmaking at its purest.

Wallmapu

Directed by:

Jeannette Paillán

Covering over 400 years of history, celebrated filmmaker Jeannette Paillán provides a riveting overview of the often fraught Mapuche history since first contact with the Spaniards. Through first-hand accounts by elders, community members and experts, the complex story of colonization, loss and continued resistance on Mapuche territory, the Wallmapu, is told. Through seemingly insurmountable odds and ever-increasing encroachment on their lands by resource-hungry multi-nationals, the Mapuche fearlessly struggle to reclaim their traditional territory.

Ana Tijoux is one of the hottest artists coming out of Chile today!
Her music stands at a unique intersection: her lyrics are modern and fueled by current political issues but her sound harkens back to the '90s and the golden age of hip hop.

About Ana Tijoux:
One of the most respected MCs in any language, Ana Tijoux is set to explode with her brand new record La Bala (The Bullet), the follow up to her Grammy-nominated album, 1977.

Born in France — where her parents were exiled during the military dictatorship in their native Chile — Tijoux became a household name in Chile with her first band, Makiza, as well as voicing the main character in the popular animated series, Los Pulentos. After going solo, she quickly gained fame throughout Latin America with a string of hits including the smash "Eres Para Mi" with Julieta Venegas. But the world really began to take notice when she dropped 1977, an album full of classic beats and her signature flow that harkened back to the '90s and the golden age of intellectual hip hop.

Santerias
This Toronto quintet bring the influences of their diverse backgrounds to the forefront of their sound in a way that has them often compared to Spain's Ojos de Brujo. Some songs bring in Middle Eastern and South Asian rhythms while some embrace a Brazilian Tropicália sensibility. With a hot new line up for 2012, band members include: Juan Dino Toledo(guitar, vocals); Oriana Barbato (bass); vocals); Irene Torres (lead vocals, percussion); Christopher Moulder(keyboards) and drums and percussion by Kevin Richards.  Some live concerts also include Flamenco dancer/ backup vocals Claudia Aguirre.

About to star working on their new full-length album in 2012, Santerias are set to expand the success resulting from their debut 2006 release Bosketches and 2008 Demonios. This includes dozens of concerts at major Ontario and Quebec festivals  and widespread acclaim from media like CBC Radio, Radio Canada, Toronto Sun, Telelatino. They have also created videos with TMN (The Movie Network) and Bravo.

"The return of Santerias, a band that it's all about synergy and fusion, they're fantastic" - CBC Garvia Bailey (Big City Small World-January 2009)

"If Santerias were just another flamenco group, I wouldn't be profiling them here today. Toronto band Santerias plays flamenco, yes, but their brand is so much more vital and alive. Hot Salsa, and more...a potpourri of styles to create their own unique sound. There's hunger for a sound and a band that puts a nice twist to flamenco".                                           Toronto Sun, Errol Nazareth (Entertainment Section, July 2009)

"Flamenco may have its roots in Andalusia, Spain, but Toronto quartet Santerias opens up the style to the sounds of the world, incorporating elements of Brazilian tropicália, Colombian cumbia and Middle Eastern and South Asian rhythms.... Fans of international sounds will find lots to like here: the songs are tight and melodic, and the band has a knack for keeping things catchy." - NOW Magazine review (May 2008)

Chosen best Alternative Latin band by NXNE (North by Northeast 2007)

"Only in a multicultural centre like Toronto could a group like Santerias come alive and thrive, introducing us to their unique blend of Latin American, flamenco, reggae and jazz-influenced sound. Language is not an issue, because the group's energy and inventiveness cut across all barriers".-
Downtown Toronto Jazz Magazine review (Cathy Riches 2007)

PROYECTO ALTIPLANO

Proyecto Altiplano's ("highlands Project") sound exists between the traditional and contemporary world of Andean music. The seven members of the band draw inspiration from the music, instruments and rhythms of the Indigenous, African and Creole heritages of Latin America, with elements of Latin American Folk, popular music and Jazz, their repertoire includes compositions by Violeta Parra, Victor Jara, Jose Seves, Nicomedes Santa Cruz, Gustavo Santaolalla, as well as original compositions and music from various World cultures.

Always in search of new music and collaborations, Proyecto Altiplano has performed with artists as diverse as: Colombian Diego Marulanda, charango virtuoso Freddy Torrealba, Greek/Chilean ensemble Companeros, Jose Seves and Horacio Duran from Inti Illimani, singer/songwriter Elizabeth Morris, the Common Thread Community Chorus. They've performed at LuminaTO, the Harbourfront Centre, The Button Factory and Gig Theatre in Kitchener as well as benefit concerts for victims of earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, the indigenous Mapuche of Chile, and migrant worker organizations in Ontario.

These multi-instrumentalis musicians will be joined by charango virtuoso Freddy Torrealba, the Jubilate Singers chamber choir and dancers from Grupo Chile, whose folkloric dances will add visual splendour to this amazing evening.

FREDDY TORREALBA

A distinguished musician, Freddy Torrealba is one of the world's premier virtuoso's on the charango. Born in Santiago Chile in 1966.  In 1979 he joins the "Casa Kamarundi", a centre of cultural resistance against the Pinochet dictatorship.  In 1980 he begins his musical studies at the Experimental Artistic School of La Reina, where he defined his love for folkloric music.  He completes all his studies in guitar and begins learning charango.  Since then, him and his instrument have been inseparable.
In November of 1992, the renowned Cuban singer/composer Silvio Rodriguez, after watching one of his performances, was so impressed, that he immediately invited him to perform with him on a tour throughout Chile.  Since then, he has been awarded the honour of being named a "Maestro de Charango" by the Bolivian Charango Society, has recorded two solo albums and has participated in the album "Charango, Chilean Composers" alongside the most distinguished "charanguistas" in Chile.  Currently he holds the post of Professor of Latin American String Instruments at the Metropolitan University of the Science of Education, and Technological University of Chile.

Lago Ontario.
