The professions of sports psychology: Research, training, and on-field counseling.

Prof. Francesca Vitali

Assistant Professor (Senior Researcher, RTD-B) at the University of Verona, Italy

What are the disciplinary boundaries and the various professions within sports psychology?

We should begin with a definition of the discipline, a discussion of some historical context, and the different models of professional training (including the Italian model in a European and international context). Furthermore, emerging factors include professional competencies and knowledge, ethical standards, and the presentation of some examples of individual, group, and organizational interventions.

What is the psychological and behavioral response of an athlete to an injury? There are various emotions, thoughts, and social interactions involved. These aspects can vary significantly throughout the rehabilitation process, both in terms of quality and intensity. Moreover, various psychosocial factors that arise during the rehabilitation process can impact not only the athlete's emotional well-being but also the treatment outcomes and, at times, the decision to return to sports.

Furthermore, scientific literature recommends a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses not only biological aspects but also psychological and social elements in the evaluation and treatment of the patient.

Psychosocial factors involved in post-injury rehabilitation and return to performance.

Within each Youth Club, the promotion of sports as an educational and developmental tool, or as a source of overall well-being and growth for young athletes, serves as the framework within which the synergistic efforts of all adults involved should operate. The role of the Sport Psychologist is embedded in this declaration of intent to support various components of the system by addressing psychological and relational issues with specific methodologies, skills, and tools.

What functions and roles does the Sports Psychologist play in youth contexts, and what are the insights and guidelines for approaching this challenging field of intervention consciously?

What are Perform-Ups?

These applications are committed to promoting well-being and empowerment by enhancing mental skills in both sports and business contexts, both nationally and internationally, using technology. Perform-UP Tennis, Golf, and Volley are applications for mental training (M-health) aimed at improving the psychophysical well-being of individuals.

The apps offer personalized training paths and the opportunity to integrate mental preparation into their daily routines through scientific protocols and programs in mental training and sports psychology. They contain over 300 audio and video contents, allowing athletes to train in techniques such as breathing, relaxation, mindfulness, and mental visualization within a customized weekly program tailored to the athlete's specific sport.
