The DC Universe app is now available on Apple iOS (includes Apple TV), Android (includes Android TV) and Roku.  No words yet on a PS4 or Xbox One app (but it can't be far behind).

The streaming service will launch tomorrow, September 15th, but I got to poke around with the interface earlier today.

There's a ton TV, but and very few live action films (no Wonder Woman or Justice League, etc.) - I believe it's less than 30 movie titles.  Most of the Movies section were direct-to-market Warner Animated features (which I already own most, if not all, of it on Bluray/DVD/digital).  It appears only the Christopher Reeves movies are available at launch.

As for comics, as far as I can see in the "Browse All" section, there are only about 300 titles, much less than what Marvel is offering for their 20,000 all-you-can-eat comics service.  Sure, the DC titles will continue to grow (they can also shrink the offering too).

There is a community/forum/message board area and a Wikipedia-style Encyclopedia section.  The store will offer exclusive toys to paid members.  I'm assuming prices will be about what Matty Collector charges for their exclusive figures, if not more.

The most disappointing thing about the service is that it's launching without any original contents.   The much-anticipated Titans show won't be available until October 12.

Price-wise at $8 a month, it's the same for basic Netflix ($8), more expensive than Comixology Unlimited ($6), but cheaper than Marvel Unlimited ($10).

Since I already own most DC's TV or Movies, and already have a healthy collection of, you know, printed comic books, this is a tough sell to me right now.

Thoughts on DC Daily Live Stream
    posted Aug 30, 2018, 11:01 PM by Vu Nguyen [ updated Aug 30, 2018, 11:11 PM ]

Some thoughts on the DC Daily live stream. It was basically a long commercial for DC Universe. They hired about 9 hosts (including Harley Quinn & Kevin Smith) for the daily program, which will launch September 15 with the live streaming service.

If you missed the DC Daily live stream, you can still watch the entire video on YouTube (as well as Facebook and Twitch) youtube.com

The video is over 2 1/2 hours long (3 hours with the 30 min countdown) and near the 1:57 mark, you can see the George Perez clip. The interview is the first clip of several, and it was originally shot around April 24, 2018, at the DC Comics office. Marv Wolfman was also there, so expect more George and Marv in future clips. See photo - George is wearing the same outfit on the right (taken in April).

During the live broadcast yesterday, Kevin Smith mentioned they will be debuting Titans at the New York Comic Con (October 3), which bothered me that they are making us wait a month instead of launching the show with the service. I think the price is a little high, do you think so? I'll probably subscribe for one month only when Titans is on the service in October and let you know what I think.

    Geoff Johns explains "F*** Batman"

    TITANS (Television Show) (2018)
    Warner Bros
“The trailer shows a piece of the tone of the show — the show’s not all that, but it does make you go, ‘Why is he saying [“F*** Batman”]?’ If you look at when Robin first left Batman in the comics, there was a lot of uneasiness and him being lost. Titans is really a series about these different characters that are all lost in their lives; just like the greatest comic book Titans run ever, by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, it’s about all these lost characters find one another. And they’re all struggling with something, and Robin is clearly struggling with his past with Batman.

And we’ll learn a lot more about it and what that is and why he is the way he is.”

    By Russ Burlingame - July 19, 2018

    Excerpt:

Johns, of course, was instrumental in creating Titans for the DC Universe streaming service, so the pair dimmed the lights and screened the trailer released earlier today.

Johns said that he wanted to honor the envelope-pushing Marv Wolfman/George Perez run, and that he wanted to celebrate characters who had shaped the property over the years.

"There's a lot of other characters in it, Donna Troy and Jason Todd, it's the whole Titans universe," Johns said.

    Opinion: Titans' F Batman

I don't mind adult languages on shows, but I didn’t think it was appropriate to use in a commercial (trailer) for the upcoming Titans DC Streaming show. Imagine if you open up your favorite magazine and see an advertisement for Titans with the words “F--- Batman” in the center of the spread. You have to understand that a lot of people, including children who loves Teen Titans Go!, watched this trailer and was shocked to hear this. I’m sure there are F words in a lot of trailers, but at the moment, I can’t remember ever watching a trailer and hearing foul languages. That’s because most trailers follow the MPAA standards, which, personally speaking, DC should have attempted to use those guidelines. I’m not just talking about language, but also maybe curb (no pun intended) down the violence, etc. I understand that DC wanted to set the tone (dark and mature) for the upcoming show, but maybe they could have addressed that in an uncensored Red Band version with full warning and a MPAA version for the general watching public.

It's still too early for me to spend $75 a year (or $7.99 a month) for this, sight unseen. I’ll wait until it arrives and give the free seven day trial a chance.

As evident by the background concept art on dcuniverse.com - it clearly shows NEW TEEN TITANS (1980) on an iPad interface.

Casting for Titans is looking for villain (to appear in the season finale).  Titans Podcast thinks it's Trigon, while That Hashtag Show thinks it's Brother Blood... It sure sounds like Brother Blood to me.

    Breakdown:

[EVAN LOGUE]: Male, Late 30s-40s, Caucasian. Charismatic. A cult leader attempting to reunite his family. Central role for series finale. RECURRING GUEST STAR. Please submit star/cameo names. Casting early for wardrobe but the role works Ep. 111 (04/09-04/19) and Ep. 112 (04/19 – 05/01)

...let’s dive straight in and check out this new breakdown.

    Here it is:

[RUTH GIBBS] Female, 20s, Caucasian or Latina or Middle Eastern, or ethnically ambiguous. Confident and kick ass. Educated. RECURRING GUEST STAR THIS SEASON WITH AN OPTION FOR SERIES REGULAR NEXT SEASON.

We got a little help from our friends over at the Titans Podcast on this one. Warner Bros is casting a wide ethnic net for this character, but the fact that they’re looking at Middle Eastern actors, combined with the fact that the role could expand to series regular status in a potential Titans season two leads us to believe that this character is, in fact, Wonder Girl, Donna Troy.

She comes across a doe-eyed, All-American and naive in her approach to her art, and life. Jennifer emulates the classic girl-next-door actors from the 1940’s and 50’s. Over at cbr.com, they asked "Was Starfire Originally Going to be Black?" because of the recent casting of actress Anna Diop as Starfire. The person asking the question was convinced that Starfire was originally black.

The quick answer is: NO.  Starfire is an alien, but the character that was originally black was Raven.

If you watch the special feature "Titanic Minds" in TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT (Bluray/DVD):

Marv Wolfman: In my original notes on Raven, I wrote, "She should be black."  But then I went, I don't like that concept, I don't like characters being called by their racial names, because you don't see... You never see white Superman, as a name.

    George Perez: Right.

Marv: You never say, white Green Lantern.

George: Even White Tiger was Hispanic.

    TITANS (Television Show) (2018)
    Warner Bros
According to thathashtagshow.com these are the series regular casting call. Note, the characters are code names, but, let's face it, it's got to be Nightwing, Raven, Starfire, and Changeling/Beast Boy.  Interestingly enough, Beast Boy could be Asian in the TV show.  I'm okay with that!

[John Crossland] Male, late 20s-early 30s, Caucasian. Equal parts charm and impenetrability, John is a cop. He has a nice smile, tired eyes and a cool, distant manner. However, when provoked, his eyes are so lethal “they drain a man of every last bit of spleen.” John is haunted by the murder of his family. Unbeknownst to those around him, he is also a vigilante. In the shadows, he fights with the commitment and conviction of an artist, the brutal grace of a dancer. Mentally and physically, he is covered in a map of scars. And though he fights to escape his past, it is often a losing battle…SERIES LEAD

    [SARAH]
Female, Mid teens, Open Ethnicity. Troubled, bullied, often scared but unwilling to show it, Sarah is a loner more comfortable hiding in her hoodie than making friends. Haunted by a dark force inside her, Sarah experiences violent episodes that she cannot understand or control. She is also plagued by recurring nightmares that lead her across the country in search of help…SERIES REGULAR

    [Casey]
Female, 20s, Open ethnicity. Casey is a tall, stunning woman, her beauty so magnificent it’s almost inhuman. Elegant, refined and mysterious, she is on the hunt to discover who is trying to kill her and why. And those after her are in for a surprise because she’s more deadly than anyone they’ve ever encountered…SERIES REGULAR

    [JAX]
Male, Mid-late teens, Open Ethnicity, Asian preferred. Funny and charming, this amateur thief’s humor hides his insecurities and past pain. Not the toughest kid on the streets, he’s learned to survive in the world with his wit and quick-thinking…SERIES REGULAR

Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment Announce All-New Live-Action Series “Titans,” from Executive Producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, To Debut In 2018

“Young Justice: Outsiders,” The Highly Anticipated Third Season Of Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice,” Also To Bow Next Year

Series Will Air Exclusively on Upcoming DC-Branded Direct-to-Consumer Digital Service

Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment today announced that executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are teaming up for the all-new live-action drama series “Titans,” which will debut in 2018. Additionally, Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice: Outsiders,” the highly anticipated third season of the popular “Young Justice” series, is also ramping up for its first mission next year.

Both fan-driven series are in early stages of production and will air exclusively on a DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service in 2018. Operated by Warner Bros. Digital Networks Group, the new digital service will deliver an immersive experience designed just for DC fans.

“Titans” follows a group of young soon-to-be Super Heroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire, Raven and many others. “Titans” is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever.

“Titans” will be written by Akiva Goldsman (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “Underground”), Geoff Johns (President & Chief Creative Officer, DC Entertainment; “The Flash,” “Arrow”) and Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl”). Goldsman, Johns, Berlanti and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl”) are executive producers of the series from Weed Road Pictures and Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

In “Young Justice: Outsiders,” the teenage Super Heroes of the DC Universe come of age in an animated world of super-powers, Super-Villains and super secrets. In the highly anticipated new season, the team faces its greatest challenge yet as it takes on meta-human trafficking and the terrifying threat it creates for a society caught in the crossfire of a genetic arms race spanning the globe and the galaxy. Equally praised by critics and viewers for its impressive visuals and rich storytelling, “Young Justice” reached more than 25 million unique viewers in each of its two seasons on Cartoon Network. This passionate fan support set the stage for the new third season.

Sam Register (“Teen Titans Go!,” “Justice League Action”) is executive producer of “Young Justice.” Brandon Vietti (“Batman: Under the Red Hood,” “Superman Doomsday”) and Greg Weisman (“Star Wars Rebels,” “Gargoyles”) are producers of the series, produced by Warner Bros. Animation. Emmy Award winner Phil Bourassa (“Young Justice,” “Justice League Dark,” “Teen Titans: The Judas Contract”) serves as the series’ art director.

The world of superheroes on the small screen won't be expanding on TNT.

In his first executive session as the president of TNT and TBS, Kevin Reilly revealed Thursday at Television Critics Association's winter press tour that the former network has passed on superheroes-to-be drama Titans.

"We just decided it wasn’t quite where we wanted to go," he said.

The project, from Warner Horizon Television and DC Comics, also had high-profile names attached in Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Marc Haimes.

Recently installed TNT president Kevin Reilly knows he has something special in a live-action adaptation of the Teen Titans superhero property, and as such, patience is a virtue.

    (excerpt)

Asked for a status report on the project, Reilly told TVLine at TNT’s Upfronts luncheon, “Akiva’s [Goldsman] been very busy doing some other things,” but it’s his hope that “maybe this summer” they will lock casting and ramp up production.

NEW TEEN TITANS #1 (Nov 1980)

‘Titans’ TV Series, Based on DC Comic, May Come to TNT
By Ben Fritz  Sep 11, 2014  7:00 pm ET

The Titans, a DC comic book team of young superheroes that has over the years included the sidekicks of Batman and Wonder Woman, are headed to the small screen.

Warner Bros., which owns DC Comics, is developing a “Titans” television series and is in talks with cable network TNT to air it, knowledgeable people confirmed. Warner Bros. and TNT are both owned by Time Warner Inc.

The Titans first appeared in 1964 as the “Teen Titans,” an all-teen sidekicks version of the adult Justice League.

However, the television series would more closely resemble a popular 1980s comic called “New Titans.” It featured a 20-something version of Robin who changed his moniker to Nightwing, as well as the new heroes Starfire, Raven and Cyborg.

Akiva Goldsman, who wrote “A Beautiful Mind,” “The Da Vinci Code,” and 1990s superhero sequels “Batman Forever” and “Batman & Robin,” is writing the “Titans” pilot, along with Marc Haimes.
