Comic Legends: Was Starfire Originally Going to be Black?

Over at, they asked "Was Starfire Originally Going to be Black?" because of the recent casting of actress Anna Diop as Starfire. The person asking the question was convinced that Starfire was originally black.

The quick answer is: NO.  Starfire is an alien, but the character that was originally black was Raven.

If you watch the special feature "Titanic Minds" in TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT (Bluray/DVD):

Marv Wolfman: In my original notes on Raven, I wrote, "She should be black."  But then I went, I don't like that concept, I don't like characters being called by their racial names, because you don't see... You never see white Superman, as a name.

    George Perez: Right.

Marv: You never say, white Green Lantern.

George: Even White Tiger was Hispanic.

According to these are the series regular casting call. Note, the characters are code names, but, let's face it, it's got to be Nightwing, Raven, Starfire, and Changeling/Beast Boy.  Interestingly enough, Beast Boy could be Asian in the TV show.  I'm okay with that!

[John Crossland] Male, late 20s-early 30s, Caucasian. Equal parts charm and impenetrability, John is a cop. He has a nice smile, tired eyes and a cool, distant manner. However, when provoked, his eyes are so lethal “they drain a man of every last bit of spleen.” John is haunted by the murder of his family. Unbeknownst to those around him, he is also a vigilante. In the shadows, he fights with the commitment and conviction of an artist, the brutal grace of a dancer. Mentally and physically, he is covered in a map of scars. And though he fights to escape his past, it is often a losing battle…SERIES LEAD

Female, Mid teens, Open Ethnicity. Troubled, bullied, often scared but unwilling to show it, Sarah is a loner more comfortable hiding in her hoodie than making friends. Female, 20s, Open ethnicity. Casey is a tall, stunning woman, her beauty so magnificent it’s almost inhuman. Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment Announce All-New Live-Action Series “Titans,” from Executive Producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, To Debut In 2018

“Young Justice: Outsiders,” The Highly Anticipated Third Season Of Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice,” Also To Bow Next Year

Series Will Air Exclusively on Upcoming DC-Branded Direct-to-Consumer Digital Service

Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment today announced that executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are teaming up for the all-new live-action drama series “Titans,” which will debut in 2018. Additionally, Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice: Outsiders,” the highly anticipated third season of the popular “Young Justice” series, is also ramping up for its first mission next year.

Both fan-driven series are in early stages of production and will air exclusively on a DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service in 2018. Operated by Warner Bros. Digital Networks Group, the new digital service will deliver an immersive experience designed just for DC fans.

“Titans” follows a group of young soon-to-be Super Heroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire, Raven and many others. “Titans” is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever.

“Titans” will be written by Akiva Goldsman (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “Underground”), Geoff Johns (President & Chief Creative Officer, DC Entertainment; “The Flash,” “Arrow”) and Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl”). Goldsman, Johns, Berlanti and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl”) are executive producers of the series from Weed Road Pictures and Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

In “Young Justice: Outsiders,” the teenage Super Heroes of the DC Universe come of age in an animated world of super-powers, Super-Villains and super secrets. In the highly anticipated new season, the team faces its greatest challenge yet as it takes on meta-human trafficking and the terrifying threat it creates for a society caught in the crossfire of a genetic arms race spanning the globe and the galaxy. Equally praised by critics and viewers for its impressive visuals and rich storytelling, “Young Justice” reached more than 25 million unique viewers in each of its two seasons on Cartoon Network. This passionate fan support set the stage for the new third season.

Sam Register (“Teen Titans Go!,” “Justice League Action”) is executive producer of “Young Justice.” Brandon Vietti (“Batman: Under the Red Hood,” “Superman Doomsday”) and Greg Weisman (“Star Wars Rebels,” “Gargoyles”) are producers of the series, produced by Warner Bros. Animation. Emmy Award winner Phil Bourassa (“Young Justice,” “Justice League Dark,” “Teen Titans: The Judas Contract”) serves as the series’ art director.

January 07, 2016 10:16am PT by Kate Stanhope

The world of superheroes on the small screen won't be expanding on TNT.

In his first executive session as the president of TNT and TBS, Kevin Reilly revealed Thursday at Television Critics Association's winter press tour that the former network has passed on superheroes-to-be drama Titans.

"We just decided it wasn’t quite where we wanted to go," he said.

The project, from Warner Horizon Television and DC Comics, also had high-profile names attached in Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Marc Haimes.

Recently installed TNT president Kevin Reilly knows he has something special in a live-action adaptation of the Teen Titans superhero property, and as such, patience is a virtue.

Asked for a status report on the project, Reilly told TVLine at TNT’s Upfronts luncheon, “Akiva’s [Goldsman] been very busy doing some other things,” but it’s his hope that “maybe this summer” they will lock casting and ramp up production.

Warner Bros is developing "Titans" television series for TNT

‘Titans’ TV Series, Based on DC Comic, May Come to TNT
By Ben Fritz  Sep 11, 2014  7:00 pm ET

The Titans, a DC comic book team of young superheroes that has over the years included the sidekicks of Batman and Wonder Woman, are headed to the small screen.

Warner Bros., which owns DC Comics, is developing a “Titans” television series and is in talks with cable network TNT to air it, knowledgeable people confirmed. Warner Bros. and TNT are both owned by Time Warner Inc.

The Titans first appeared in 1964 as the “Teen Titans,” an all-teen sidekicks version of the adult Justice League.

However, the television series would more closely resemble a popular 1980s comic called “New Titans.” It featured a 20-something version of Robin who changed his moniker to Nightwing, as well as the new heroes Starfire, Raven and Cyborg.

Akiva Goldsman, who wrote “A Beautiful Mind,” “The Da Vinci Code,” and 1990s superhero sequels “Batman Forever” and “Batman & Robin,” is writing the “Titans” pilot, along with Marc Haimes.
