Welcome to a new year at East Columbus High School (ECHS)! I’m Brittany Edwards, and I will be teaching Math I, II & III this year. I think math is a valuable and exciting topic of study, and I hope by the end of the year, you and your child will agree.

Learning the foundations of math is often like beginning a foreign language- it can be difficult to see the forest for the trees.  Let me begin by giving you an idea of what your student will be doing throughout the semester and throughout high school math. Each year the curriculum advances students’ understanding of mathematics along the topics of algebra, geometry, statistics, and discrete mathematics. The curriculum reflects the needs of business and industry today that require workers who can think and reason mathematically, who are innovative, who can communicate effectively, and who can work together in teams. The curriculum emphasizes mathematical modeling including the processes of data collection, representation, interpretation, prediction, and simulation. The course promotes active learning and teaching centered on collaborative investigations of a problem followed by teacher-led whole-class summarizing. The modeling perspective permits students to experience mathematics as a means of making sense of data instead of memorizing a process.

Overall, the curriculum is designed to make mathematics accessible to more students, while at the same time challenge the most able students. Every student struggles at some point with math- know that now, and don’t hesitate to speak up if I don’t recognize when you have hit that wall. Working with the abstractness of math builds important brain pathways and helps develop problem-solving skills. I aim to improve my students’ mathematical abilities while instilling the habits of becoming lifelong learners.

Please email me and include any email addresses or phone numbers that you would like me to send correspondence to this year. I look forward to a productive and enjoyable year!
