Did You Know….

Latex Paints can be disposed of by adding kitty litter or sawdust to absorb paint and once hardened can be placed in your regular household garbage. Another option is to open the lid and let the paint dry.

Motor Oil – New York State requires service stations and automotive retailers to accept used motor oil up to 5 gallons. There may be a minimal charge for the disposal of antifreeze, if the garage has the capability of accepting it.

Automotive Batteries – May be taken to any Columbia County Solid Waste Station free of charge.

Alkaline Batteries – AAA, AA, C, D 9 Volt & lantern batteries are regular household trash. Currently Columbia County does not have a program in place to accept these items, but is looking for a market to properly dispose of these items.

Rechargeable Nickel Cadmium Batteries – Call 1-800-Battery for most convenient disposal options.
Wal-Mart, Staples and Country House Digital (Rte 295, East Chatham) participate in recycling collection programs in Columbia County.

Electronics - All electronics are accepted at the Greenport Transfer Station only -free of charge.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs – Please contact the Solid Waste Administration Office at 828-2737 for proper disposal instructions.
