I am a professor of political science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I study democracy in the United States, with a focus on understanding how people form opinions and participate in civic life. My work often examines the roles that religion, social networks, and contexts (e.g., neighborhoods) play in shaping attitudes and behaviors. I am particularly interested in the extent to which people are exposed to disagreeable views, and in how such exposures may make them more tolerant of others.
My work has appeared in political science journals, as well as other outlets. I have published several books with major university presses.
I currently serve as the Director of the American Politics Research Lab (APRL), and am a faculty fellow at CU's Institute for Behavioral Science. Previously, I served as the Director of CU's Keller Center for the Study of the First Amendment (2017-2021).
