Caernarfon Castle was built by Edward I on the site of a former Roman fortress and Norman fort in the 1280s to display English wealth and power over Wales. With its uniquely shaped towers and color-block brickwork, it is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though the exterior is complete, the plans for the building’s interior were never fully finished. The castle also includes a museum dedicated to the Royal Welch Fusiliers army regiment.
Please don't forget to enrol for Reception class in the Spring Term of Nursery.
All dinner money needs to be paid in advance using the ParentPay.
Homework will be regularly uploaded to Seesaw. Seesaw ,Facebook and Twitter are our main platforms of communication. Please ensure you have access to these platforms.
Seesaw will be used to update you regularly on your childs educational journey.
Reading on a regular basis is so important; it helps us to develop our vocabulary store, our imagination, our fluency and expression. Please can you ensure your child is reading every night for 5-10 minutes.
Below are our RWI sounds and Rhymes. We will Focus on a sound a week. The children will be learning each sound through play. Please practise the sounds at home regularly.
We promote Welsh language and culture at every opportunity in and around the school, see below for language patterns we are working on so that you can practice them at home.

THEME: DINOSAURS! WE'RE NOT SCARED...
We used the book 'We're going on a bear hunt to model our own class book titled, 'We're going on a dinosaur hunt.'
Dinomania came to visit and we dressed as dinosaurs for the day.
Please stay safe and well. My thoughts are with you all at this difficult time. I hope the photos and resources included here support you. I was hoping to end the dinosaur theme with a dinosaur tea party linked to the story, 'The tiger who came to tea.' by changing the words to 'The dinosaur who came to tea'. We were going to make a dinosaur cake and write invitations to the tea party.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsPF96mqGtI (Make Long lasting play dough: By now pupils should be able to mould, sculpt and form simple shapes such as snails, figures, spiders. They can also make numbers, letters and simple words in the dough. Models can be cooked slowly in the oven to be painted with a mix of PVA glue and paint)

A typical school day begins with a healthy breakfast and the register followed by some Welsh songs and language patterns (see top section of this web page for ideas and activities. I have also recorded story telling of Tedi Twt). I'm sure the children would like to take the register in your home and play school: Write a list of who lives in your house. Sound out your names and pupils can draw a smiley face or draw a tick next to who is in the house. Don't forget any pets! :) Encourage the children to 'write' and to hold their pencil like a Prince or Princess (or to hold it like a crocodile)
2. Next, we have a chat about our feelings and any news that we want to share. This develops good talking, turn taking, listening and eye-contact skills needed for effective communication skills. (8.50-9.15am)
3. We will play together and learn to complete jigsaws and games. (30 mins) Pupil choice.
4. Read, write Ink: for half an hour: Check out the Ruth Miskin RWI site https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/ and
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/alphablocks . Example: Shuffle letter cards masdtinp. call out a letter sound. Your child can 'splat the correct sound' using a plastic spoon for example. (In school we use plastic fly swatters)
Pupils always do a phonic recognition activity, writing the phonic sound and possibly blending the sounds/reading activity.
5. Tidy up time :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhw6JDF4A0Q and a brain break song.
6. Literacy activity
7. Healthy snack and play time (10.40am-11.10am) (Don't forget to sing Penblwydd Hapus twice while washing hands like doctors and nurses)
8. Maths time: Start with rhymes or songs such as the 5 little ducks in your pori Drwy Stori Pack.
9. Lunch time 12-1pm (Don't forget to sing Penblwydd Hapus twice while washing hands like doctors and nurses)
10. 1-1.15pm: Register. Encourage your child to recognise their name. Mix up name cards. Can they find their name?
11. 1.15-1.30pm: Assembly: RE/ moral ethical social story e.g. Aesop's Fables. sharing and caring songs and stories, kindness, good and bad choices, friendships.
1.30-2.40pm: The afternoon session is your choice of music, art, physical, science, nature, cooking, Welsh, geography, history, science or Computer based activities.
2.40-3.15: Tidy up time, play time.
Home time song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LDArAJf7-c&list=RD0LDArAJf7-c&start_radio=1

I can say the numbers 0-10 forwards and backwards.
I can recognise numbers 0-10.
I can order the numbers 0-10.
I can sing number rhymes.

I can draw around 2d shapes.
I can role play a shop.
I can name the 2d shapes (Triangle, rectangle, square, circle. If they can name these shapes move on to oval, hexagon etc)
I can name the 3d shapes (Cube, cuboid, pyramid, sphere, cylinder)
Make a pattern e.g. red, blue, red, blue. yellow, red, green, yellow, red, green using potato printing. Look for patterns. Make a number pattern 1,2,1,2,1,2.
Measure objects: Which is the heaviest/lightest, longest/shortest ?
Estimate a number e.g. how many raisins are in my hand? (without directly counting at first: have a guess then count how many.)
Make 3d models using shapes
Sing songs and rhymes.
Make hopscotch grid using chalks.
use buckets of water and brushes to paint numbers on fences or on a path.
play shop: (Pupils count the pennies)
Children love cardboard boxes to build houses/rockets/dens. Use shapes for windows, write numbers on the door, paint the box, build a rocket and count down to zero.
Paint numbers on stones and hide them around the home or garden. Pupils must find all the numbers and order them 0-10. Or write the numbers on paper and peg them on the washing line. Don't forget to count in Welsh too!
Pupils love playing hide and seek which is an ideal opportunity for pupils to count forwards or backwards.
Let your child help you lay the table for food.
Card games
Board games

I can retell events or experiences and talk about what I have made or done in simple terms.
I can speak clearly with other children and familiar adults.
I can recognise differences and similarities in objects and visual and tactile stimuli and link objects and images with some spoken initial sounds. (Play I spy games, match objects to initial sound of a word. Pupils who can do this move on to identifying the end sounds in words then the middle sounds ready for blending)
I can recognise my name. (even when there is more than one word starting with the same sound e.g. Mason, Maxwell, Mallie, Mathew)
I am beginning to 'write' and talk about what I have written.
I can hold my pencil like a big boy or girl.
I can recognise some spoken sounds.
I can name the colours. I can name animals, vehicles. I can describe objects using all my senses.

Do a puzzle: jigsawpuzzlesdirect.co.uk
treasure hunt: Plan a treasure hunt and hide clues around the house or garden. Use vocabulary such as high/low, in front/behind, above/below, beside
Encourage your child to draw/write/paint about their day. Keep a diary.
Paper plate weaving: Hole punch the centre and around the edges of the plate. Use Yarn/laces for your child to weave in and out
Play noughts and crosses.
Take a walk in your garden with paper/crayons and trace the bark of a tree or leaves. (leaf rubbings)
Grow some seeds.
Press flowers to use in creative work. https://www.proflowers.com/blog/how-to-press-flowers
Hide and seek: Write a list of all the things you would like your child to find e.g. a wooden spoon, a pair of socks, small toys, a blade of grass and give them a box or bag to collect the items. Talk about the items. Count them. Play I spy with my little eye something beginning with...
Help around the house. Children love to be given jobs to do and to feel important. Ask them to pair up socks, stack the tins, hang out washing, help in the garden.
Challenge: To draw everything they see outside their bedroom window. Label their drawings.
What's inside the bag? Beth sy yn y bag? Put objects inside a bag. Pupils have to guess what the object is by touch alone. You could give clues to extend their vocabulary.
Play memory games: Choose a variety of objects/shapes/number cards etc. Your child covers their eyes and you take one object away. Can your child think what is missing. To make it more difficult use 7-10 objects and take away more than one object.
Make a parachute for your toys.
Have a quiz night: Make up questions on different subjects such as nursery rhymes, dinosaurs, superheroes or fairytales. Who will be the winner? You could also do name that tune.
Make a musical instrument. Develop rhythm and copying a pattern. Count the beats you can hear.
Set challenges: Boys can be especially competitive and love a challenge. Tick off each challenge they achieve. bounce a ball 10 times, hop 12 times...
Paint with water
Use your teddies and toys to put on a puppet show.
Do a torchlight wildlife hunt. Children love to play with torches and magnets too.
Make gloop: 2 cups of cornflour in a large bowl. A few drops of food colouring if you so wish. Pupils use a jug of water and add it to the flour. As you mix it will get gloopier and gloopier. Great for sensory play and mark making with a simple dough tool/end of a brush/stick.
Freeze a toy or coin in ice: Encourage your child to think of ways of how to rescue their toy or get the coin. Use a timer to count how long it takes to rescue the toy.
Grow a carrot top jungle: Keep your carrot tops. Place in a saucer with their cut edges down. Fill the saucer with a few millimeters of water and watch as, over the next few days, the tops begin to sprout. Soon you'll have a mini jungle for your figures to explore.
Have a house party: Decide on a date and time for your party and send everyone in your house invitations. Ask everyone to wear their best party clothes. On the day of the party decorate the room with home made paper bunting. play party games such as pass the parcel, musical bumps, dance and freeze, karaoke. Then have a party tea with a homemade Fairtrade chocloate cake of course!

Cut up sound cards and pupils make words. It's important for the children to be able to move the cards around to make words. Magnetic or sponge letters are also good to achieve this skill.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsmUXOzQGjU (Alphablocks blend the letters: It's important to talk to your child and reinforce the reading in these programmes. Pause and stop the programme as you work through it. Think of other words that rhyme e.g. man, dan, fan, pan, mat, cat, fat, sat)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeOOB-GVOyI (formation of letters c a d o g q)
Children who have difficulty saying the sounds try using this powerpoint. Make sure your child looks at your lips and over emphasise the sound. Young children often confuse hearing the sound 'th' and 'f', 'b' and 'd', 't' and 'd', 's' and 'sh'. This may affect their spelling skills later on so I think it's best to help your child to hear the sounds clearly from an early age. At Coed-y-Dderwen we do not 'shwar' the pure sounds. We never add an 'uh sound when pronouncing the sounds.
b is not "buh", c is not "cuh", t is not "tuh" and so on. P is a quiet sound
