Professional Writing

Professional writing is designed to prepare students for types of writing situations they’ll find in managerial, PR, non-profit work, or other professional positions. We focus on basics of clear, well-organized writing, but also on decision making in terms of style, organization, and content.

Every year since this course was first offered, there’s been a hands-on, real-life, service-learning portion to the class, in which students do professional writing projects for a local organization. When I started teaching the course, I decided to focus on working for non-profit organizations in the neighborhoods close to Coe.

With this project, students learn about and become part of the community in which they live, and have the chance to do a real project, putting their skills to use.

The non-profit organizations get some much-needed writing projects completed--it's a win-win situation!
We've worked for these Cedar Rapids non-profits over the years:

Willis Dady Emergency Shelter
Jane Boyd Community House
ARC of East Central Iowa
Mound View Neighborhood Association
Paul Engle Center for the Arts
Paul Engle Center for the Arts
Coe College--various programs (taught during Winter Term)
Four Oaks Dummermuth Intergenerational Center
Ecumenical Community Center Foundation
