Lydia’s Loft
203 Old Statesville Road in Huntersville
(10 minutes away from Hough)
Lydia’s Loft is connected to First Baptist Church of Huntersville but they welcome all volunteers.  The mission of Lydia’s Loft is to provide clothing for free to people in need in our local area. Teen volunteers can greet guests, fold and sort clothing items, and stock the shelves.  Students interested in volunteering should send an email or call ahead to let the other volunteers know they will be coming.  Students can volunteer weekly, monthly, or whenever they have free time or need service hours.  Lydia’s Loft will keep a log of your hours if you choose to go multiple times and will sign service logs when needed.

Historic Latta Plantation
5225 Sample Road in Charlotte, NC
(30 minutes away from Hough)
Historic Latta Plantation is a plantation site from the early 1800s that educates the public on American and local history.  Students should have an interest in history and enjoy working with all types of people. Your personal experiences and interests will determine exactly what you would do as a volunteer. Students should be committed to volunteering on a regular basis, but the hours will be flexible with your schedule.  Volunteers should have their own reliable transportation and must be 16 or older.  Contact or visit Historic Latta Plantation if you are interested.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library
Cornelius Branch: 21105 Catawba Avenue
The Cornelius Branch of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library is in need of teen volunteers for the fall semester. Students interested in Volunteering at the public library should be committed to weekly hours and have organization skills.  Some volunteer activities include shelving books, helping guests find specific books, helping elementary schoolers with their homework, or reading with young children.  You will have to apply to become a volunteer (using the link above), but having consistent hours and working close to home is the quickest and best way to get service hours.

Mastery Exchange Program
Room C109 at Hough
Talk to Mrs. Viteri
Thursdays afterschool 2:30-4:30
If you are interested in helping your peers in school (subjects like Math, English, Social Studies, Science) and have an interest in practicing Spanish this program is for you!  Students that volunteer as tutors/helpers will help their fellow students reach their goals, and in exchange, can practice or learn Spanish from the students that they help or other volunteers.  Mastery Exchange is run by Bilingual Leadership on Thursday Afternoons (2:30-4:30).  Mrs. Viteri appreciates students that come week after week and not when they feel like it.  Talk to Mrs. Viteri in C109 if you are interested or have questions.

Bright Blessings
1150-C Crews Road in Matthews, NC
(40 minutes from Hough)
Bright Blessings is an organization that provides cheer to people in the Charlotte area.  They have programs that provide birthday parties or school supplies to local children in need.  It is a super fun and super cute charity. Getting a group of friends, your family, or another organization like a church group is the best way to volunteer.  Contact Bright Blessings to see how you can help.  This opportunity is great if you need service hours, but want to work on a single project rather than have weekly or regular hours.
