The English Department planned a series of activities to celebrate Halloween this year. Spooky activities kicked off from 30th October 2012; beginning with a screening of the movie, “Scooby Doo”, which was played to a packed audience of students from the Junior form. It drew shrieks of horror, amidst squeals of delight from the audience. On 31st October, the covered playground in the school was abuzz with excitement and learning fun during lunch hour, as a Halloween booth was set up to thrill and chill the students. Students’ linguistic skills were put to the test when they had to recite spooky and creep tongue twisters, and unravel Halloween-themed riddles and cryptogram puzzles. For every tongue twister or riddle or puzzle unraveled, students earned stamps in their English passports, and candies. Eager students surrounded the booth like bees congregating around their bee hives, whilst the English Ambassadors, adorned with Halloween headgear and paraphernalia, encouraged even more students to join in the fun. In no time, queues of students were formed that snaked all the way to the middle of the covered playground; all ready to rattle off tongue twisters to the teachers at the booth.

Following this, the inaugural Amazing Pumpkin Race was held after school. It constituted an engaging and active way for students to enhance their language skills, as they were challenged to decipher clues which required them to look up the definition of unfamiliar words in a dictionary, and make sense of figurative use of language. Congregating at the ‘Spooky Base’ in the English Language Room, participants were briefed on rules of the race, before they dashed out and ran around the school compound, scouring for 14 pumpkins which were hidden in obscure places. Working in teams of 2-3, the participants searched very nook and cranny of the school, and left no stones unturned. The happy frenzy lasted for 30 minutes, with participants returning to the base to calculate the number of pumpkins found. The participants thoroughly enjoyed hunting out those elusive pumpkins, and it was certainly an exciting way to learn the English Language, and fun-filled way to culminate the week, before the start of the first Term Test.
