Encouraged by the success of the First Plain English Speaking Contest 2011/2012, the English Department of our school organised the Second Plain English Speaking Contest 2012/2013, together with New Territories Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School as a co-organiser. The Second Plain English Speaking Contest is a public speaking contest for all Junior form students from schools in the New Territories (West) and other government schools; and is supported by the NET Section, Education Bureau.

Conducted over 4 months, the Second Plain English Speaking Contest provided an avenue for students to sharpen their speaking skills and build confidence in public presentation, in addition to promoting the personal development of students through the use of clear and effective spoken English. 30 student contestants, representing all Junior form classes, attended a series of 3 training sessions conducted by our school’s NET. Through the training, the contestants learnt both speech writing and delivery techniques. The contestants subsequently put their oratorical skills to the test at 2 Preliminary rounds, which saw 2 contestants, Lam Yat Ching, Gina (1C) and Wong Tsz Tung, Sonia (3A), emerging as winners to represent our school at the Semi-final.

The Semi-final was held on 7 May 2013 at N.T. Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School, and saw 20 contestants from 10 government and aided schools across Hong Kong pitting their public speaking skills against one another. It was a close competition, and 10 contestants finally earned themselves coveted places in the Final.

The Final of the Second Plain English Speaking Contest 2012/2013 was held successfully on the morning of 8 July at Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School. 10 finalists from 6 schools were locked in an intense neck and neck competition. They delivered rousing speeches that earned the adjudicators’ commendation for the sheer quality and confident delivery of their speeches.

Our student, Lam Yat Ching, Gina (1C), won the coveted Championship of the contest; whilst Queen Elizabeth School’s 2 finalists swept both the 1st and 2nd Runner-up prizes. Notwithstanding, all finalists were winners in their own right that morning - for their spunky performance in the presence of a huge audience, and in English Language to boot.
