Uniform Guidelines

Dressed for Learning

The Dora Erickson Elementary School dress code was established to help increase a sense of pride for learning. We want each child to reach his or her potential in an environment that is safe and free from learning distractions. We want learning to be the focus for our children. We look forward to the positive impact school uniforms will have on the academic environment and the safety of our school.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SCHOOL UNIFORMS:

  • Help prevent gang related clothing and insignia
  • Creates a level playing field among students related to clothing
  • Help students concentrate on schoolwork
  • Financial savings due to cost of uniforms versus other school clothes
  • Increase safety within the neighborhood

GENERAL POLICIES
  • We believe that a clean-cut and professional image reduces distractions and promotes learning. Therefore, school uniforms are expected to fit the student appropriately, be cleaned on a regular basis, and cannot deviate from the style and color choices. Students are expected to present themselves in a neat, clean, and professional manner at all times.
  • Our students should dress their best, look their best, and do their best. If a child is deemed to be wearing inappropriate attire, the steps listed below will be followed.  If in doubt about the appropriateness of an article of clothing, check with the school office before purchasing such items.

PROCEDURES/CONSEQUENCES OF NOT WEARING SCHOOL UNIFORM
  • 1st Infraction:  The teacher will remind the student of uniform requirements.
  •  2nd and 3rd Infraction:  A friendly reminder note will be sent home by the teacher specifying what part of the student’s uniform violates the uniform policy.
  • 4th Infraction:  The teacher will contact parents by phone discussing uniform policy violations.
  • 5th Infraction:  The teacher will contact parents by phone asking them to bring in the appropriate uniform for their child.
  • 6th Infraction:  The principal will schedule a meeting with the parents, teacher and student to discuss uniform violations.  Prior to meeting, the principal will contact parents to bring in the appropriate uniform for their child.

The school will strive to achieve full compliance through the use of positive reinforcement measures, and will resort to disciplinary action only when positive measures and supports fail to assure compliance.
