Terms
Mac OS:
dock: bottom shortcut bar
finder: file browser
spotlight: search button (upper right)
Menu bar: shared menu bar (top of screen)
Command Key: shortcut key same as control key in windows
Lighting:
Focus: Changing the clarity of the light by moving the lense toward or away from the lamp.
Trim: Changing the shape of the light with shutters
Gel: Colored sheet that goes in front of the lense
Gobo: cut-out shapes that can be put in front of the lense
Recording:
Track: a separate layer of sound in garageband
Sound Region: piece or bubble of sound that can be moved and edited
DSP: Effects added to sound
Loop/Sample: Pre-recorded piece of sound
Podcast: Audio or video recorded program that is posted to web
Sound Effect: Pre-recorded piece of sound
Foley: The act of recording sound over video
Audio Equipment Overview
Cable Types:
XLR: found on microphone cables
¼ in phone: patch cords and speaker cables
⅛ (or 3.5mm) in phone: headphones or general audio cables
RCA: red and white(black) link smaller audio components
Mixing Console: (uses for each type of adjustment)
Gain: sets the input sensitivity
EQ: sets bass and treble or pitch levels
Pan: sets the balance of Left and Right sounds
Level: sets the level that will send to the stereo mix
Stereo Level: sets the level for output of stereo sound
Other Equipment:
Amplifier: Provides power to create the sound through speakers
Mixing Console: Connects and controls any sound and routes it to the amplifier
Speaker: creates sound waves
Monitor: a speaker to play sound back to a performer on stage.
Microphone: turns sound waves into electrical signals.
Microphones:
Dynamic - Uses the same basic setup as a speaker. A small movable induction coil is attached to a diaphragm that sends an electrical signal when moved by soundwaves.
* Good general use mic.
Condenser - Uses a diaphragm and a fixed plate to send electrical signals depending on the distance between the two.
* Very sensitive; can pick up from greater distances.

Light Types and uses:
Par: Work or filler lights
Scoop: Work lights
Fresnel: Filler light on stage
Ellipsoidal: Spot or filler light
Follow Spot: Movable spot light
