Objective:
Students will show knowledge of the use of DSP effects in GarageBand with software instruments and a microphone.
Task:
In groups of two or alone, using a microphone in either Audacity or GarageBand, create a sound that you will then add effects to. Then create a instrument track and play a short clip in on any instrument you choose. You will then add DSP effects to the sounds and experiment with four different effects on each sound.
Procedure:
- Create a garageband file called "DSP Effects".
Connecting and Recording with a Mic:
Have someone from the group choose a mic and get a cable.
Connect these to the your board.
Open the program of your choice and get it ready to record.
Come up with ideas for your two sounds.
If we need to, we can very quickly go around the room and record each group, so that we don’t get too much background noise.
Recording a Software Instrument:
Choose 'new track' from the track menu and select 'software instrument' from the choices.
Choose and instrument from the side panel for this track (drums, piano, etc...).
Press the 'Record' button and play in various notes or sounds.
If you don't like what you played, undo or delete the region and try again.
Adding DSP Effects:
GarageBand:
Double-click your new track to bring up the side pane and, click the edit tab there.
Under the effects area, click on a new space to add an effect.
Make adjustments by clicking the picture of the effect.
Repeat these steps so you have 4 different effects.
* You can turn on one or all of the effects by clicking the 'led light' button on the left.
Finally, turn on more than one of the effects to achieve an even different sound.
Audacity:
Highlight the section of recorded sound and click ‘edit’ ‘duplicate’. This will create a second track to add the effect.
Mute the original recording and highlight the duplicate.
Go to the ‘Effect’ menu and select an effect.
Adjust the settings and preview until you like the effect.
Repeat steps 1-4 so you have 4 different effects.
