Objective: Students will continue to work with timbre (instrumental tone color) by re-orchestrating the attached file.
1. Download the file called Amazing Grace and open it in garageband.
2. Playback the file and discuss as a group the textural elements of this arrangement (melody, accompaniment, bassline, drums, etc.) and the track in which each resides.
3. Mr. Heyer will review how to change the instrument sound of each track.
4. Create a parameter for yourself in re-orchestrating or arranging this file. For example, you may choose to use a specific instrument group (i.e. woodwinds, brass, strings, or percussion); or you may choose a style/genre (popular, classical, electronica, etc.).
5. Set levels: Different instrument sounds in real life differ in volume level. Think about/ discuss balance and blend. Mr. Heyer can demonstrate how to set track volume levels and then individuals can make adjustments to one's own arrangement. Remember to keep the melody in the foreground (more present) and the accompaniment and bassline in the background with a more supportive role.
6. If you have extra time, experiment with adding loops, applying DSP (digital sound processing) effects, or creating tempos changes (such as a ritardando near the end).
