Good Thinks Happening In the Classroom

Some of the Shelby High Basketball players spent their evening playing basketball, throwing the football, and playing games with students at the Jefferson Elementary School Spring Carnival.  The elementary students loved hanging out with team.

The Junior Civitans worked at the Farmers Market this past weekend. They provided two crafts for children to complete.  The children made peanut butter-pinecone bird feeders and collages of the earth out of recycled paper.

These cool projects - door hangers, nut / bolt puzzle and C clamps were all done by Zack Byers, Israel Vinson, Lane Spangler,Nathan Burgess and Omar Corona Vargas (teacher Rick Greene).

Members of the Shelby Junior Civitan Club donned their dungarees and participated in planting potatoes with students from North Shelby and other surrounding schools.  They cut seed potatoes and then planted them.   They then fertilized the field.  They enjoyed hot dogs and blizzards provided by Dairy Queen around a campfire. The potatoes will be ready to be harvested in June.

Señora Salazar's Spanish 1 students recently brought the kitchen to the classroom. These students are wrapping up a unit on foods and drinks in the Spanish-speaking world and learned how to prepare plátanos maduros (fried plantains). Several students researched other popular dishes and prepared them for the class to sample. Many students tasted foods they had never tried before, and all enjoyed this opportunity for hands-on learning!

Mr. Blanton's core construction classes got to sample what it is new and upcoming with  Shelby High School CTE - we will be offering Masonry Classes beginning the 2018-2019 school year.  We will offer levels one, two and three of the masonry courses and students will be able to earn valuable hands-on experience in another area of the construction trade.  All students who have completed the introductory Core Construction class are eligible to register for the new Masonry Program during registration in the next couple of months.  Questions about the new program can be directed to Mr. Jonathan Blanton who will be teaching all levels of our masonry program.

These are pictures of Mr. Bryson's 3rd period doing a virtual tour of the White  Civics House's East Wing at Christmas.  Christmas celebrations are a time of year where Presidents pay particular attention to their ceremonial role as head of state.
Students use VR goggles and the Google Expeditions app to view the work of the 89 volunteers who help to decorate the yuletide White House. Points of interest include the 18 foot, 1 inch main Christmas tree in the East Room and the handcrafted Nativity scene that has been on display through 9 administrations.
Not only can students experience the festive decorations, but also the historic paintings that the East Wing houses year round.
