Course Objective:

The Reading Extension II course is designed to help students become proficient, confident readers by developing reading comprehension, vocabulary and word building skills.  The program promotes fluency, and transitions students from guided to independent reading.  In addition, students work on written language skills focusing on paragraph development, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Students are given informal assessments throughout the year to assess current reading levels and skill development.  A variety of materials will be utilized to provide instruction in multiple areas of reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing.

Course Topics:

Throughout the year we will work through the following six units of study. 

    • Demonstrating knowledge of vocabulary and word/phrase meanings in and out of context
    • Demonstrating comprehension of nonfiction text
    • Analyzing nonfiction text.
    • Demonstrating comprehension of fiction text
    • Analyzing fiction text
    • Applying knowledge of comprehension to various types of reading material
