Welcome Back!

A Bit About Ms. Q

My name is Vanessa Quevedo and  I am thrilled to be a part of the Chico Junior staff. I look forward to getting to know you and together making this an amazing year.

A little tidbit about me; I grew up in Chico in Butte Creek Canyon.  My mom, who was also a teacher, passed on her love for teaching to me.  It was in her third grade classroom that I discovered my calling in life; teaching.  I attended Chico State for my undergraduate and post-graduate work.  Upon graduating I moved to Italy where I worked as a live-in nanny for an amazing Italian family.  I quickly fell in love with their two young children, Davide and Margherita.  I had the opportunity to learn Italian, travel and make life-long friends.  It was an experience of a lifetime and helped guide me to where I am today.

For the last two years I had the pleasure of teaching Jr. High and High School math in Princeton, CA.  I also had the opportunity to coach the Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball teams, create our high school yearbook and plan both prom and the senior trip.  While I was sad to say goodbye to my students, I am very excited to be teaching in my home town!

I’m looking forward to a great year!

Our math class is unlike many others because we understand that everyone can achieve in math. We accept that mistakes are positive because it means our brains are growing. We ask questions and use creativity to solve problems and express our reasoning. In our math class we work collaboratively and engage in conversation to develop a deeper understanding. But what's most important is that in our class depth of understanding is more important than speed because math is about learning, not performing.

Sports are not unlike school, the more you practice and persevere, the more you will succeed.  That's why in our class we practice growth mindset, where we believe with hard work and dedication we all can achieve.
