Making a Difference is
language arts curriculum for rising freshmen designed to empower young people to make a difference in their world. It’s an exciting time, and a great opportunity for students to start thinking about the future. What do they want their lives to look like in five, ten, or twenty years? What careers do they want? What forms of education or training will they need after high school to reach their goals?
is GEAR UP's summer transition program to support rising freshmen. The "Making a Difference" language arts curriculum is a central academic feature, along with a math curriculum, and a counseling component, to give the newest kids on the block a sense of their own abilities, an opportunity to make friends, and a chance to acclimate to high school.
GEAR UP, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. GEAR UP provides services in Chicago Public High Schools. Program objectives include: increase the academic performance and preparation for post-secondary education; increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in post-secondary education; and increase GEAR UP students' and their families' knowledge of post-secondary education options, preparation, and financing.
