Cheshire Alumni Gather for a Special NightBy Mike Lewis (posted 1-25-16)
On the night of Saturday, January 9th, former Ram hockey players gathered at Wesleyan’s Spurrier Snyder Rink for a night of nostalgia.
Shortly following the Cheshire varsity ice hockey hard-fought loss to North Haven, 39 players took to the ice once again to participate in the annual Alumni game. With people of all ages, from Robert Malloy (class of 2003) to Luke Vendetto, who just graduated last year.
You would think getting 39 people of all ages together for one night of hockey would be tricky. But according to co-organizer Michael Federico, it really wasn’t.
“With today’s technology, it’s (organizing the event) a lot easier than you’d think. Having the database that we have of our alumni, it’s only a little bit of work” said Michael, who is the father of current Ram hockey player Matt Federico, class of 2017.
Before the game, the fifth annual Schena/Whitlock Award was given to senior Griffin Cunningham. This award was created to honor 2001 CHS graduates Greg Schena and Mark Whitlock, who both passed away one week apart in May 2010. The recipient exemplifies leadership qualities both on and off the ice. It was a special night in Middletown, one that was about more than just hockey.
The alumni game demonstrated the same thing. Teammates from a decade of Cheshire hockey reunited once again. The score? It didn’t really matter. What mattered were the friendships and the comradery that has stayed true all these years. Michael Federico said it best.
“That’s what this is all about. Recognizing the past and keeping that fire alive”
Cheshire Varsity Ice Hockey’s next home game is Saturday January 16th at 10am against New Fairfield Immaculate.
