A Force for Change: Fundraising for The Small Things Organization

In the Star Wars world, May 4th and May 5th are more than just random dates on the calendar: they’re cause for celebration. “May the 4th” is officially Star Wars day, and “Revenge of the 5th” is an extension of that, seeing as they are both puns that reference the series.

This year, at Cheshire High School, Mrs. DiSorbo’s freshmen classes are partaking in a Star Wars- themed fundraiser to help support the Small Things, an organization that donates to orphanages in Africa.

They are asking for the student body’s support to help make this fundraiser a huge success. On May 4th and 5th, there will be donations boxes making rounds during all the lunch waves, and any spare change is appreciated. Small amounts of money can do big things in Africa.

One of the leading organizers, Sofia Valentin (Class of 2020), shared her reasons as to why she found the charity helpful, saying, “I think it is important to donate because each dollar helps a child continue their life. My favorite part about the organization is that they try to not separate the child from their family... they build more houses or rooms in order for the child to stay with family or relatives.”

May 5th, this Friday, will also be a Star Wars dress down day for students and teachers. Wear your favorite t-shirt or outfit to show support for the Small Things (masks and costumes are not allowed due to AP testing).

Sammi Bosque (Class of 2020), another organizer of the group, elaborated on what the charity does and the importance of any kind of donation, saying, “These kids need our help. A dollar from us could bring a smile to their faces when they’re able to eat tonight and get clean water. It’s a simple way to help out an orphanage.”

Remember: this Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th, remember to support the Small Things Organization and donate any spare change during the various lunch waves to help out orphanages in Africa, and to wear your Star Wars memorabilia on Friday.
