CHESHIRE PUBLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

In partnership with families and communities, it is the mission of the Cheshire Public Schools Music Department to instill in each student the inspiration for a lifelong participation in music.

CHESHIRE PUBLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY

• Music is an integral part of the human condition, and is essential to the well-rounded education of all children.
• The ability to create, perform, and respond to music emotionally and intellectually has an important humanizing influence.
• The skills, knowledge, and habits acquired through the study of music enrich students’ lives.
• Through these experiences, students build positive personal relationships with others, preparing them to live and work in a culturally diverse society.

WHY EVERY STUDENT SHOULD STUDY MUSIC & THE ARTS

1.  provide essential ways to {understand and express life experiences} {discover, make and interpret meaning}
2.  develop deep understanding of past and present cultures/peoples

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS

• The CHS Concert and Symphonic Bands were recognized by the Connecticut Music Educators Association as being Honor Ensembles for the State of Connecticut in March of 2005.
• The Cheshire High School Marching Ram Band earned the United States Scholastic Band Association State Championship for seven consecutive years: 2001-2007 & the All-States Championship four out of the past six years:  2001, 2003, 2005, & 2006.
• The Cheshire High School Marching Ram Band was awarded the National Outback Bowl Festival Grand Champion Award for Field Show and Parade in Tampa, Florida on January 1, 2007.
• The CHS Winter Color Guard placed first and was awarded a Gold Medal for the Scholastic Open Division at the Winter Guard International Championship, 2006.
• The CHS Jazz Ensemble placed 3rd at the Berklee Jazz Festival, 2006
• The CHS Vocal Jazz Ensemble placed 2nd at the Berklee Jazz Festival, 2004
• The CHS Jazz & Vocal Jazz Ensembles were selected as Featured performance ensembles at the
Connecticut Music Educators Association 2005 In-Service Conference
