The Lewis County Substitute Cooperative provides certified substitute teachers for 13 school districts within the Lewis County area.

From I5 (Interstate 5) take exit 76 (13th Street exit) go straight past AM/PM gas station, through the stop light continuing on SW 13th Street.  At the next stop light turn right onto S. Market Blvd.  1861 will be on the right hand side of the road.


Application requirements and procedures

REQUIREMENT:  NEW SUBSTITUTE ORIENTATION MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO SUBSTITUTE TEACHING PLACEMENT.  PLEASE SEE THE NEW SUBSTITUTE ORIENTATION TAB ABOVE.

To become a Substitute Teacher:

You must possess a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate (you may apply with a temporary permit). You must have current fingerprint clearance through OSPI.  Once you have downloaded and filled out your application, please bring the application into the Lewis County Substitute Coop.  You will need to bring the following information:

  • The completed application (see Forms and Downloads)
  • Your Washington State Driver's License (a copy will be taken)
  • Your Social Security Card  (a copy will be taken)
  • Official sealed College/University transcripts
  • Be prepared for your photo to be taken to create your substitute ID badge
  • Confirmation of Completion of New Substitute Orientation
  • Confirmation of Receipt of Substitute Handbook
  • Fingerprint clearance through OSPI.
To become an Emergency Certified Substitute Teacher:

If you do not possess a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate you can apply to become Emergency Certified to substitute teach.  An emergency substitute can be assigned only after all regularly certified substitute teachers are deemed unavailable.

The rate of reimbursement for emergency substitute teachers is the same as what is paid to regularly certified substitute teachers.

 The following steps would be necessary to be considered:

  • The completed application (see Forms and Downloads)
  • Your Washington State Driver's License
  • Your Social Security Card
  • Your High School Diploma (a copy of the original will be taken) or sealed official High School transcripts (showing your graduation date).
  • Official sealed College/University transcripts (a college degree is required to continue on with the emergency certification process.)
  • Be prepared for your photo to be taken to create your substitute ID badge
  • Confirmation of Completion of New Substitute Orientation
  • Confirmation of Receipt of Substitute Handbook
  • Fingerprint clearance through OSPI
  • Create an E-Certification account through ESD/OSPI

You will be required to do 6 ½ hours of online Safeschools training.  Each section will need to be completed and you must pass each section in order to be approved as an emergency substitute teacher for the Lewis County Substitute Cooperative.  To obtain your Safeschools training "username" contact the Sub Service Office at subservice@chehalisschools.org and provide your full name, your email address and your phone number.
