The Music Program
The goal of music at Rashkis is to present a holistic music education program based on the philosophy and approach of Carl Orff and in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The Orff approach to music education is holistic, experiential and process oriented. It is for all children, not just the most musically or intellectually gifted and encompasses aural, visual, and kinesthetic learners. Carl Orff's philosophy is based on solid, pedagogical principles. A structured, sequential development of knowledge and skills encourages joyful participation, creativity and personal musical growth from all participants. The Orff approach taps the very essence of our beings. Children learn through doing, exploring and improvising. They are active participants in an integrated, guided process, one which allows for differing musical abilities. In the Orff approach, no child is neglected. The Orff philosophy combines the elements of speech, rhythm, movement, dance, and song. At the heart of all this is improvisation - the instinct children have to create their own melodies, the explore their imaginations.

Elemental music is never only music, but an integration of movement, dance and language. It is music one creates oneself in which one is involved not as a listener, but as a participant. --Carl Orff

Meet Mrs. Noell
I was born in Penang, Malaysia and went to Catholic and Mission schools where music and art classes were only offered as an extra-curricular activities. Despite the lack of music education offered in school, I grew up singing, playing the piano, dancing, reciting poetry, and acting. These experiences later provided me a great foundation to become a music teacher. I received my undergraduate degrees (Mass Communications and Piano Performance) from St. Andrews University and my Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. While visiting a music classroom in Greensboro, I saw creative music and movement classes that excited me and I knew I wanted to try my hand at this kind of music teaching. Over 20 years later, I am still excited and challenged by the task of bringing the delight of music to children.I have completed all three levels of Orff Schulwerk Certification and received my National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Certification in Early to Middle Childhood in 2005. I am so fortunate to work with 525 brilliant students!!
