Our Approach

We believe, to paraphrase a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that the true goal of education is academics and character. Our approach to character education is based on the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support (PBIS) program and the research of Dr. Martin Seligman (University of Pennsylvania) and Dr. Chris Peterson (University of Michigan).

Using the principles of PBIS, we believe that a consistent, systematic, school-wide set of behavioral expectations and disciplinary rules are the foundation for an equitable and effective school. Our basic expectations are simple.

The research of Dr. Seligman and Dr. Peterson has identified twenty-four character strengths that contribute to engaged, purposeful, and healthy lives. We are focusing on a smaller subset of character strengths: Curiosity, Open-Mindedness, Courage, Self-Control, Grit and Integrity. For the complete list of character indicators, click here. Our goal is to incorporate character into everything we do.
