Using Work Paths

Georgia guitar ad
There are ways to create paths for shapes without manually creating them with the Pen/shape tools. One of the best is to create Work Paths in Photoshop and export the shapes to Illustrator.
  • Any selection in Photoshop can be made into a Work Path. Notice what you've got selected before creating the Path/Path file. If you have everything BUT the guitar, Select > Inverse. Otherwise, your Path will be the surrounding space.
  • When opening Paths in Illustrator, they will be blank. Paths are the shape -- shapes don't naturally have Fills or Strokes. You'll have to apply those aspects.
  • Paths sometimes contain multiple pieces -- guitar tuning knobs easily get disconnected. Create a group in Illustrator when you bring in the path. (Object > Group -- Command + G).
