Elementary Report Card

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools' Elementary Report Card reflects standards-based grading practices that align with North Carolina content standards for reading, math, science, social studies, world language, physical education, art, and music. Components of a Standards-Based Report Card

Grade Level Standards

The academic standards listed on the report card are consistent for all elementary schools in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.  The standards are provided to public schools by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.  The purpose of the elementary report card is to provide parents, teachers, and students with more accurate and specific information about their child’s progress toward meeting grade level academic standards. 

Academic Proficiency Levels

Academic proficiency levels show the overall progress of the student toward meeting the grade-level standards and measure student progress toward each individual standard. Academic proficiency levels show the highest level consistently achieved at the time of the report card.

Work Habits/Social Emotional Learning Proficiency Levels

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children develop awareness and management of their emotions, set and achieve important personal and academic goals, use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, and demonstrate decision making and responsible behaviors to achieve school and life success.  Fostering social and emotional well-being is a key component in improving conditions for learning.


Attendance is important. Please monitor your child's attendance and tardies in order to help your child have a strong academic foundation. 


The report card consists of four quarters (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4).  Each quarter is nine weeks.  While the report card provides communication each quarter, school staff will share about student progress through progress reports, feedback on student work, notes to families, email, and/or conferences.  School staff should communicate with families throughout the school year.


Subjects are listed, followed by the standards that are addressed at each grade level.  The elementary report card does not list every standard taught, but it highlights the priority standards for each grade level.  A priority standard is a carefully selected subset of the total list of the grade-specific standards within each content area that students must know and be able to do by the end of each school year in order to be prepared for the standards at the next grade level or course.

Teacher Comments

The section for teacher comments allows one or more teachers to provide additional communication with families regarding their child’s progress.  This is an important section of the report card, because it allows teachers to elaborate more than a 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 academic proficiency level allows.
