Bishop Michael J. Begley Award

The Bishop Michael J. Begley Award is sponsored by the AOH Sons of Erin and is awarded to the Boy Scout Troop in the Charlotte Diocese that best demonstrates Duty to God, Community Service and Scouting Skills.

It is named in honor of the first bishop of the Diocese of Charlotte and fellow Irish American whose duty to God and service to the people of North Carolina should never be forgotten. Bishop Begley led the Diocese of Charlotte from 1972 until his retirement in 1984, and was known as a wonderful man and a friend to both young and old.

In 2012, the AOH Sons of Erin Division established the Bishop Begley Award to recognize the "Top Boy Scout Troop" in the Diocese of Charlotte.  The first chartered president of the AOH Sons of Erin Division was the late Tim Lawson.  Tim was a chartered member and past NC AOH State President.  He was the Committee Chairman for Troop 288 of the BSA and also Scoutmaster for a number of years.  He was also Cubmaster of Pack 288 for many years and he was very active in the Scouting movement.  Tim wanted the AOH Sons of Erin Division to help support this youth program in the Diocese of Charlotte.  In memoriam of AOH Brother Tim Lawson, the AOH Sons of Erin have pledged to support Tim's efforts and keep the Begley Award on-going with a plaque and gift card to the winning Troop.
