Frequently Asked Questions:
Since 1958, ICEC has served as a statewide resource connecting educators to conservation and our natural world. Today ICEC is known as North America's longest-running environmental education organization.
The days of considering environmental education as an “add on” element of teaching inside or outside the classroom are over. In today’s ever-changing world, environmental education needs to be a fully integrated concept throughout both formal and informal education venues. Simultaneously, budget shortages have led to a significant reduction in funds and resources for field trips and outdoor, out-of-school learning experiences for Iowa youth. Both formal and non-formal educators have to find creative ways to make use of remaining resources. While such a situation does often drastically alter traditional practices, it may also serve as an opportunity to re-connect with local surroundings as a way to grow appreciation for and awareness of immediate surroundings. In doing so, learners of all ages may find small, relatively simple methods of becoming better land and resource stewards in ways that benefit their local community.
ICEC fosters partnerships between formal and non-formal educators and across networks spanning regional and national scopes. Each year ICEC hosts the Winter Solstice Workshop, and partners with other organizations and agencies on educational events such as the Governor's Conference on Environmental Education, the Midwest Environmental Education Conference, and other EE-related activities throughout Iowa and the Midwest.
ICEC provides professional development scholarships for formal and nonformal educators who may experience financial hardship or are unable to receive training assistance from an employer.
ICEC sponsors youth wilderness trips as a way to connect Iowa's youth with the outdoors and the natural world.
Annual membership dues are $25. Checks may be paid to ICEC.
The ICEC Executive Committee meets on a quarterly basis. Members are invited to serve on both the ExCom and also as sub-committee members. Sub-committees formed from within the ExCom include:
