Welcome to Social Studies!

  • Welcome to Social Studies!

This is going to be a year of discovery for my 6th graders.  6th graders will learn about how the modern world got to be the way it is because of the actions of the ancient civilizations that came before.  We will study about the effects of geography on civilizations, the roots of culture, paleolithic and neolithic peoples, Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, the Byzantine Empire and Medieval Europe.  We will also study five of the world religions and you will have a chance to learn more about civilizations of your choice.

Surprise!  Yes, I have one 7th grade class this year!  In 7th grade the curriculum is about United States history from the end of the Civil War through the end of World War II.  We will study many different eras and time periods.  Since it is a Presidential election year, we will also be studying about the Electoral College and other pertinent topics to the election.  Hang on to your hats, we have a lot of fun learning to do!

Biomes Cultures PPT (W, 9/20) Tonight students need to go to Grobe View and open the Powerpoint about how traditional cultures adapted to the different biomes.  Students do NOT need to take notes on the PPT.  It will give them ideas on how to answer Part C of the test however.

        Text Exploration 1 and 2 (F, 9/29)
Geography Test (W, 9/13) Today the students turned in the first half of their test which was the assignment, A Whole New World.  On Wednesday the students will use A Whole New World to do the second half of the test.  Students need to know the pros and cons of each of the 10 geographic features that are their vocab words.
Book Order (T, 9/12) If students are ordering from the book order, they need to get the order form and payment to me tomorrow.  I plan on ordering on Wednesday.  (Students can also order at scholastic.com by using my teacher GV72T .)

        Geography Test (W, 9/13)
Reading Book (W, 9/13) Students always need a reading book with them.  However, since there is a test tomorrow and Thursday, they definitely need it just in case they finish with the test early.  If they do, the one thing they can do is to read.

    Wednesday, 9/13
        Text Exploration 1 and 2 (F, 9/29)
Geography Test (R, 9/14) Today I explained the test.  STUDENTS CANNOT WRITE ON THE TEST IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM.  They CAN open it up to read the directions again.  They may also write prewriting on a lined sheet of paper and use it on the test tomorrow.
Reading Book (R, 9/14) The students always need a book in class.  Since tomorrow they have a test, it is doubly important that they have a reading book. If they finish the test early, they may only read.  Having a reading book will be part of their grade on the test.
