The Catalina Foothills School District has one of the top band programs in the state of Arizona.  Band students begin instruction in 5th grade, continue through middle school, and then continue on at CFHS.  The four elementary schools in the CFSD16 school district (Canyon View, Manzanita, Sunrise Drive and Ventana Vista)  offer band instruction beginning in the 5th grade.  This website is dedicated to informing students and parents about the elementary band program. Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Concerns page to enter any questions or concerns that you may have about our program and a director will answer them for you.

The Elementary Band Program

Beginning Band is an instrumental music program for 5th grade students who wish to learn how to play a band instrument.  No previous knowledge of music is required.  The program is also offered to those students who have had previous experience with instruments but wish to learn a new instrument.  Even though these students may progress more rapidly than the new players, the forward progression of the classes will be gauged by the class as a whole.  Eventually the separation of abilities will narrow.

Each student will learn to assemble and care for his or her instrument properly and play his or her instrument with the proper posture, embouchure (mouth shape), and hand position to create a quality sound.  Students will also learn to read music notation, play in a large ensemble with good tone production, and follow a conductor.  Band students will attend one small group class and one full band class a week as they prepare for their two main concerts during the year.  Students will have opportunities to challenge themselves above and beyond the primary band program with the possibility to participate in the Elementary School Honor Band Festival (by audition) and the Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Grading

Grading in the fifth grade beginning band is used to facilitate communication between directors and parents. All fifth grade beginning bands will use the same format when grading so parents have information available about student achievement and attendance at rehearsals and concerts. The fifth grade band grade will include these categories:

  • Sectional Participation - Students will earn a 3 by being in attendance with all materials on time, prepared for class, and by participating in class (When absent the grade will appear as X)

  • Full Band Participation - Students will earn a 3 by being in attendance with all materials on time, prepared for class, and by participating in class (When absent the grade will appear as X)

  • Playing Assessment - Student progress will be measured by playing assessment selected by their teacher from our method book and concert music. Students that are playing at a proficient level for a fifth grader will receive a 3. Students not receiving a 3 will be receive a comment clarifying the reduction in the grade.

  • Performances - Students will earn a 3 by being in attendance at the performance on time, wearing the correct uniform, and performing as instructed by their band director.
