Introduction

Arts education is so important. A wealth of research shows that students who take art score higher on standardized and college entrance tests. They also enjoy school more, have lower absence rates, lower drop-out rates, better social and leadership skills, and advanced creative problem solving skills! For more information on the pro's of taking art, visit the web site for the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

CFHS offers 4 years of studio arts. The focus of studio arts 1-4 is 2D work. Mrs. McHugh's ceramics/sculpture classes focuses on 3D work. Over the course of the year we cover the following materials: pencil, colored pencil, marker, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, scratchboard, India ink, collage, mixed media, and printmaking. Advanced classes also use charcoal and oil paint.

Art 1 has some basic core projects that are repeated annually, but I do not repeat projects for Art 2 - 4 since those levels are grouped together in one class.

Studio arts has the same
high expectations as in other subject matters at this school. There are a wealth of jobs available in the arts and it's my job to make sure you have the tools needed to go further if you desire. That would include art history, theory and concept. I also recommend that you try other arts classes here. In addition to studio arts, CFHS offers ceramics and sculpture, graphic design, photography, media arts, theater, stage design, choir, band, and steel drums.
