Congrats, Grads!

McConnellsburg High School recognized 65 graduates during a commencement ceremony on Friday, June 2. Speakers included valedictorian Chase Novak, salutatorian Rylan Cutshall, and students ranked third and fourth academically, Carly Swope and Amber Strait.

On behalf of his classmates, Rylan thanked parents and teachers. Of the faculty, he said, "They spent hours trying to make us the great students who we are. No matter how much we complained, they never gave up on us."

Carly also struck a chord of gratitude, and she highlighted the importance of sports and FFA: "These activities helped me to learn teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and the importance of a strong work ethic."

Amber and Chase also expressed their gratitude for family, faculty and community, and they drew laughter from the audience while recalling some of the funny moments of their school careers.

Diplomas were distributed by school board president Cory Gress and retiring superintendent Dixie Paruch. Principal Erich May thanked her for her years of service; he also thanked the seven graduates who have committed to the United States Armed Forces.

Also during commencement, community organizations and individuals presented scholarships to the graduates. Over $60,000 in scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2017.
