Spelling/Phonics

Parents,

The students have been doing an amazing job with our beginning of the year phonics lessons and word work activities. At this point in the school year, the second grade language arts team believes that the students are ready to begin integrating occasional spelling tests into our routine. Next week is a review week for spelling. We will review all of the rules that we have been working on since the beginning of the school year. The spelling list that I have attached is the list that we will use next week to review.

In second grade, our spelling tests include some words from the list, but it also includes new words that follow the same rule as the word list. Our belief is that if students can build, or construct, a new word using their knowledge of the rules that they have learned, it more accurately reflects their level of mastery. The ultimate goal is for our students to correctly spell words in their own writing and accurately decode new words in the books that they are reading. We will not have a set schedule for spelling test this school year. As we feel that students have a solid understanding of new word patterns and rules, we will wrap-up those lessons with a spelling test. I will send the list home the weekend before the test, and I will also upload the lists to my webpage (under the spelling tab) in the case that you would like to print it for at-home use. As always, please let me know if you have any questions at mia.ligonpier@cfisd.net
