Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing break. Myles and I really enjoyed our down time and I hope you did the same.  I missed my Wonder Waves and I am so excited for the new year and the second half of 5th grade.

Homework:

Speaking of the last half of 5th grade....CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?  We have so much to accomplish and our time is just racing past.  We are hitting the ground running this week.  Please continue to check Dojo and planners for news, updates and assignments. The transition to middle school will be so much smoother if students are used to being responsible and conscientious about their work load and time management.   We will be working as a classroom community to explore the topic of homework and time management.  We are going to take an in-depth look at how student feel about homework, the challenges to completing assignments and why homework is valuable.  The goal being to increase understanding and, therefore, create intrinsic motivation and buy-in for being responsible about classwork and homework.  Please stay tuned for updates on how our conversation goes!

We will be starting a year in review project.  Please look through some photos of this past year and have your student bring them into school.  Copies are ok but I would love to see some color.

Partnership needs a representative from our class!
We need a parent from your class to be the Partnership Class Representative. What is the Partnership Class Representative? You keep all the families in your class informed of upcoming Partnership events. The teacher can provide email contacts for you so that you can keep the information flowing. The Partnership Class Representative also works with the other Class Representative in the same grade to organize the Winter Festival Basket of goodies to auction and the activity or craft for that grade level. If you are skilled with email and a bit of organization, this is the job for you!

5th Grade:  Week 5

We are settling in to our normal academic schedule.  Below is a preview of what we have in the works:
  • Language Arts:  We are in the middle of the novel, Storm Runners.  This is an exciting adventure novel about a young boy and a hurricane.  We have also started our Article of the Week.  We will be working through these together for now.  Eventually they will become independent work and/or homework.  The purpose of AoW is the allow students to practice analyzing how they interact and think through text.  This is very new to most students, so it is going to take time, but they are working hard!
  • Math: We are exploring the place value system and moving into powers of 10 and exponents.  We are also working on reviewing basic fact fluency.
  • Social Studies:  We are continuing to study states and capitals.  We will have a test withing the next week.  We will also be starting a mini-inquiry project on the different states within the next few weeks.  We have been connecting our geography study with the weather in each region as well.
  • Science:  WEATHER!  We continue our exploration of weather.  We have looked in depth at hurricanes and wind.  Next week we move into the water cycle, clouds, weather systems, forecasting and weather instruments.  Don't forget!  We have a field trip to Cape Fear Museum next Tuesday!

Do you know all the States and their Capitals? We are learning and practicing in class!  Check out this cool video!  Tour of the States

There are also several online games that can help student identify states and their capitals.  I have included one link below for you to try.

5th Grade:  Week 4

We had a great FIRST Month! We covered Hopes and Dreams, rules and expectations, started band, explored math centers, located states and their capitals, read a ton of books, observed Mystery Boxes and had an amazing field trip.  This is just the beginning!

I have to give a huge shout out to our drivers and chaperones from our first field trip this past friday.  We visited the National Weather Center and WWAY to learn more about weather.  I think everyone really enjoyed themselves and learned a couple things along the way.  Lunch by the river and our impromptu stroll through downtown were super enjoyable. Thank You again!

Our next field trip is scheduled for September 27th.  We will be leaving at 10:00 to travel to the Cape Fear Museum.  While we are there, we will participate in their "Wacky Weather" program.  We will return to school at 12:30.  Any volunteers????  By the way....there is an excellent parent program scheduled for that morning at 8:15 on Responsive Classroom.  I encourage you all to come for the program and then stay and drive on our field trip!

5th Grade:  Week 2

It has been a busy and full week in 5th grade.  We are following our normal schedule now as we continue with our social curriculum of community building activities.  Here are a few of the things we have covered this week:

  • We are beginning our first units in social studies and science by exploring the concept of map making, longitude, and latitude.  Students created their own map right on our classroom floor.  We will be expanding this study into science by looking into Hurricane tracking maps.  All of this will lead us into our first novel study, "Storm Runnners".
  • As we begin to develop our classroom expectations, we spent time exploring the concept of "fairness".  We had an AMAZING and thoughtful discussion about what "fair" means for each student.  Students were able to authentically arrive at the idea that fair mean giving each person what they need, not necessarily what they want.
  • We have been exploring the idea of Multiple Intelligences over the past week.  Hopefully your students have shared their MI survey results.  You may even have taken one of your own.  I know several students were surprised by your results!
