News from your MMU Counselors

December 2017

Although winter seems a bit slow to gain traction this year, we all know what is likely just around the corner so hopefully you are ready for snow drifts, cold temps, and winter driving fun (half of you just groaned but the other half cheered!).  For many of us, our thoughts have turned to the approaching holidays and upcoming New Year.  In Student Services we often see an increase in the number of students looking for support this time of year. The end of the first semester is quickly approaching and this can bring added stress for already busy students. In addition, holidays can bring added financial stress to families as well as thoughts of loved ones who have been lost. We are fortunate to be in a community that so wonderfully supports our students and please do not hesitate to give us a call and let us know if there is someone you are concerned about. Together we can be partners in keeping all our kids healthy and safe.

Best wishes for Happy Holidays and a fantastic start to 2018!

Important Notes:

PSATs: Juniors who took the PSAT in October should be receiving access to their online score reports from CollegeBoard on December 11.  During that week, counselors will be meeting with students in their English classes to discuss scores as well as some life-after-high-school topics.  It might be helpful to know that with students’ PSAT scores comes free and personalized SAT test prep through Khan Academy.  Students will receive info on how to access this when we meet with them.

Study Skills Workshop:  On January 9th at 6:30 here at MMU we will be offering an evening program designed to help 9th and 10th graders prepare for mid-term exams.  They can meet with our local experts (MMU teachers) to learn helpful study tips and strategies in different content areas.

Burlington and Essex Tech Center Visits:  On December 5th and 6th, all tenth grade Biology students had the opportunity to attend informational presentations put on by our two Tech Centers.  Any student who would like to visit a program of interest in person may do so by coming to Student Services and signing up with Ms. Halvorsen.  Visits to Essex will occur on December 12th and 13th with the Burlington visit happening on December 14th.  A permission slip must be filled out.

A note about Driver’s Ed: Each year we get many questions about how to register for Driver’s Education at MMU. The first thing student’s need to do in order to get on our Driver’s Ed list is to bring their permit to Student Services to be copied. This makes one eligible for the class. Each semester, we schedule the 60 oldest students whose permits are on file. We will likely schedule Spring 2018 Driver’s Ed in October.
