CLARKSTOWN SOUTH HS December2018

Mu Alpha Theta sponsored their annual Edible Mathematics Contest on December 18, 2018.

First Place was awarded to Jimmy Giorgio, Bobby Giorgio and Anthony Campise for their Derivative Rules Cake. Chelsea Adams earned Second Place for her Optimization Cake. There was a tie for Third Place between the Conics Cake created by Gianna LaRosa, Jessica Palmer and Gianna Cinque and Coby Rich’s Abacus. Rachel Chung and Hannah Kim garnered Fourth Place for their Sierpinski Triangle Cakes.

Three South students Rajan Lakhani, Devan Shah and Christopher Thomas tied for first place on the December 2018 American Scholastic Mathematics Association monthly math contest by correctly solving all seven contest problems.

The South Mathematics Department made a donation to Camp Kesem, a one week free summer camp for children who have been impacted by a parent’s cancer. A South alumnus,

Kerry Qualter volunteers at this camp as a student at Johns Hopkins University.

South students are applying for admission into Mu Alpha Theta, the national mathematics honor society. The Induction ceremony will be held on February 27, 2019 at 6PM in the South High School Auditorium.

Mary Ann Gavioli attended a district mathematics meeting on December 20, 2018 with Dr. Susan Yom, Assistant Superintendent and Carla Starelli, District K-12 Coordinator and mathematics department chairs from North High School and Festa Middle School.

Juliette Speckenbach is preparing her Algebra 2 students for the January 2019 Algebra 2 regents exam on January 24, 2019.

Dev Patale correctly scored all six questions on the December 2018 Rockland County Math League contest to earn first place. Second Place was shared by Jennifer Enright and Rivindu Wijedoru. Charles Lee is the South advisor for the Rockland County Mathematics League.

Bruce Nickels is the advisor for the Computer Club which meets every Thursday after school in Room 321.

Round Two of the Log One Contest, sponsored by the national Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics Honor Society) was administered to students at South High School. James Rung and Dev Patale finished in First and Second Places in the Mu Divisiion. In the Alpha Division, Ivan Lam and Christopher Thomas were the top two scorers, and Swaneet Jha and Devan Shah captured the top two spots in the Theta Division.
