CLARKSTOWN SOUTH HS SEPTEMBER 2016

Math teachers Diana Colgan and Stephanie Ludwig return to the South HS Mathematics Department full-time from maternity leaves.

Carol Havdala joins the Mathematics and Special Ed Departments at South High School.

George Engel completed AP training to teach the new Computer Science Principles AP at South High School.

Charles Lee completed training in AP Statistics to teach AP Statistics at South High School.

Michael Ludwig, Suzanne Pritts and Maura Wright updated the Geometry Study Guide to align with the New York State Common Core Geometry standards.

Meagan Bechard, Mary Ann Gavioli, Paula Shaffsick, Juliette Speckenbach updated Algebra ii sequencing and pacing to align with the new New York Algebra ii math standards.

Kerry Papenmeyer updated the Algebra 1B Common Core curriculum to align with the New York Common Core Algebra math standards.

Meagan Bechard, Diana Colgan and John Guarino are co-teaching Algebra 1A and 1B with Denise Gilroy, Carol Havdala and Kerri Violante respectively.

Suzanne Pritts is coordinating the Problem Challenge national math contest. The first contest problem will be posted on September 12, 2016

Charles Lee is coordinating the Rockland County Mathematics League at South High School with the first after school math contest scheduled for October 17, 2016.

Mary Ann Gavioli is coordinating the monthly math league contest sponsored by the American Mathematics Association (ASMA). The first contest will be administered during extended homeroom in Cafeteria 103/104 on October 11, 2016.

Mary Ann Gavioli will be advising the quarterly publication Mad About Mu with the assistance of Co-Editors Rebecca Fu, Alex Lam, Wenlu Zheng

South students are preparing entries into the annual New York State Math Poster Contest sponsored by the Association of New York State Mathematics Teachers. Posters will be on display in the South High School Library Gallery from September 21 through Oct 5, 2016. Math teachers will judge the posters and the top 6 posters will be forwarded to the New York State Poster competition.

Bruce Nickels will continue to prepare students for the AP Computer Science in Java.

Rena Flores, Denise Gilroy Jacqueline Hurley. Roseann O’Reilly continue to collaborate with members of the South High School Mathematics Department in preparing students for the mathematics graduation requirement.

Meagan Bechard attended a Texas Instrument workshop incorporating technology into the Common Core Algebra 2 curriculum.

The South High School Mu Alpha Theta chapter received recognition for their performance as a top ten Region 3 participating school at the National Log One Contest during 2014-15.

The annual South High School Mathematics Department Awards were held on May 27, 2015 at 7 P.M. in the South High School auditorium. Senior Award plaques were given to Jason Levy for Excellence in AP Statistics, Zachariah Lee for Excellence in AP Calculus BC , Catherine Michie for Excellence in AP Calculus AB and Victoria Zhang for the Vincent Festa Memorial Math Award for the highest female average in Calculus BC.

Zachariah Lee was awarded a national Mu Alpha Theta scholarship award in the sum of $4000 for his outstanding leadership and commitment to promoting extra-curricular mathematics activities as Co-President of the Mu Alpha Theta chapter at South High School.

Meagan Bechard and Juliette Speckenbach continue to teach after school Algebra 2/Trig Regents Review classes. Meagan Bechard, Michael Ludwig and Maura Wright are teaching after school Geometry Regents Review Sessions to prepare students for the June 2015 Geometry Regents Exam while Denise Gilroy and Erin McGuire are preparing the algebra students for the New York State Algebra Regents Exams. Students in John Guarino’s AP Statistics classes are completing end of the year final projects utilizing the statistics concepts learned during the year while students in Pre Calculus classes taught by Meagan Bechard and George Engel are completing a final project integrating technology of TI NSPIRE. Students in Algebra2/Trig classes taught by Meagan Bechard, BruceNickels and Juliette Speckenbach are also completing final projects integrating the TI NSPIRE technology.

Students in College Calculus Honors classes taught by Mary Ann Gavioli and George Engel are completing the curriculum topics to qualify for (4) college credits in Calculus from SUNY at Albany.

The high South scorer on the monthly American Scholastic Mathematics Association math league contest was Kevin Jiang with Zachariah Lee in close second place. The cumulative scores of the South team earned South a First Place Ranking for the 2014-15 school year.

The high scorers on the New York State Annual Algebra Math League Contest were Dave Mathew and Dilan Lakhani respectively. Both students are in Suzanne Pritts’ Geometry Honors classes.

CLARKSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL APRIL 2015

Math League Advisor, Charles Lee travelled to Syosset High School on Saturday, April 25, 2015 with seven South students who competed on the Rockland County Math League team at the 2015 New York State Mathematics League competition. South students competing statewide were: Chris Cherian, Kevin Jiang, Justin Kim, Piers Kwan, Leon Lei, Daniel Sakhnovsky and Kevin Xie. Kevin Jiang earned the highest score on the individual part of the contest of all Rockland County participating schools.

Paul Shaffsick gave birth to twins Paige Arya and Charles Gerard on April 25, 2015.

Regents Review Sessions have been scheduled after school at South High School to help prepare students for the June 2015 New York State Regents Examinations. The schedule is posted on the South High School.

Mu Alpha Theta sponsored a Mu Movie showing of “The Theory of Everything” on Wednesday April 22, 2015 in the South HS Planetarium. Erin McGuire assisted with the event and the ice cream social after the movie.

Poster submissions by Geometry Honors students in classes taught by Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts have been entered into the annual American Statistics Poster Contest. Contest results will be announced in June 2015.

Fourteen South students competed at the 2015 Greater New York Metropolitan Mathematics Fair on Sunday March 29, 2015 accompanied by Erin McGuire who also judged at the Math Fair. Results of the Math Fair are: Gold medals were awarded to: Brooke Basch, Mia Dominick, Leon Le, Frank Sapienza, and Wenlu Zhang. Silver medalists of the math fair were Jonathan Kay, Dave Mathew, Sonali Mehta, Aashna Pandya, and Shelby Ro. Finally, the bronze medalists were Anisha Singh, Hannah Buckler, Chris Crimi, and Joseph Jang.

Mad About Mu received a Silver Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for the 2013-14 quarterly newsletter issues published by the South High School Mu Alpha Theta chapter of the National Mathematics Honor Society. This year the Crown Awards were given to 235 exemplary publications from 1,203 eligible schools throughout the United States.. Editors for 2013-14 were Christopher Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Terry Kantor, Zachariah Lee, Katie Zhu and Susan Zollinger and advisor Mary Ann Gavioli.

Kevin Jiang and Aakash Parikh earned perfect scores on the March American Scholastic Mathematics Association monthly math league contest. Second place scorers were Chris Cherian and Zachariah Lee.

Chris Cherian, Leon Lei and Kishan Patel were the first place scorers for the March Rockland County Math league. South teachers Erin McGuire and Juliette Speckenbach assisted Math League Advisor Charles Lee in scoring the contest questions.

Fourteen South High students: Brooke Basch, Hannah Buckler, Chris Crimi, Mia Dominick, Joseph Jang, Jonathan Kay, Leon Lei, Dave Mathew, Sonali Mehta, Aashna Pandya, Shelby Ro, Frank Sapienza, Anisha Singh and Wenlu Zheng, have been accepted to compete at the 2015 Greater New York Metropolitan Math Fair at Brooklyn Tech High School on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Selected students are enrolled in math classes taught by Meagan Bechard, Mary Ann Gavioli, John Guarino, Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts. South teacher Erin McGuire will be accompanying students to the Math Fair competition and also judging at the Math Fair competition.

Four South students qualified to compete in the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Exam) on March 19, 2015 based upon their score on the AMC (American Mathematics Competition): Kevin Jiang, Justin Mathew, Aakash Parikh and Arjun Sharma. Alexander Lam was the high scorer on the AMC-10 while Aakash Parikh was the high scorer on the AMC-12.

One hundred eight South students were inducted into the South High School chapter of Mu Alpha Theta on March 4, 2015. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Morton and School Board President Michael Aglialoro and Guest Speaker Olga Grant, class of 2004 congratulated the inductees together with South principal, Debra Tarantino.

More than three hundred Pi Day posters were displayed at the South High School Upper Library for the annual Pi Day Contests, with this year’s theme “Celebrate Pi’s Birthday” on 3/14/15. Mackenzie McCormick won first place for her animated Pi Day video while Helen Smith won first place for her Pi Day song with Hannah Berg, Amanda Ferraro and Christina Hanos earning second place for their Pi Day song. Clarkstown South HS February 2015

Fifty six (56) South students competed in the 2015 American Mathematics Competition (AMC) on February 3, 2015 at South High School. Results will be reported in March 2015.

Kevin Roth joined the South Mathematics Department as a student teacher under the guidance and supervision of Maura Wright.

Kevin Jiang was the high scorer at the February American Scholastic Mathematics Association competition with a perfect score of correctly solving all seven questions. Arjun Sharma finished in a close second place solving six of the seven problems correctly.

Sixty-five (65) South students in classes taught by Meagan Bechard, Mary Ann Gavioli, John Guarino, Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts entered their mathematics research papers into the 2015 Greater New York Metropolitan Math Fair to be held on March 29, 2015 at Brooklyn Tech High School.

Round 2 of the Log Contest was administered at South High School with Aakash Parikh the high scorer in the Mu division and Kevin Jiang and Alexander Lam earning first place in the Alpha and Theta divisions.

Leon Lei solved all six Rockland County Math League problems correctly at the February math league contest with Kevin Jiang, Aakash Parikh and Jennifer Wu sharing second place. Erin McGuire and Charles Lee scored the contest questions for the math competition.

South students are creating entries for the 19th annual Pi Day Contests using this year’s theme of Celebrating Pi’s Birthday (3.1415…) to be judged by mathematics teachers in the South High School mathematics department.

Students in Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts’ honors geometry classes are completing independent projects for submission to the Annual American Statistical Poster Competition.

One-hundred eight(108) South students were notified that they will be inducted into Mu Alpha Theta on March 4, 2015 at the annual Induction Ceremony at CLARKSTOWN SOUTH HS.

Suzanne Pritts is completing courses to become a Google Ambassador for the Clarkstown Central School District.

The South Computer Club meets Thursdays after school in Room 321 under the supervision of Bruce Nickels.

The 2013-14 Mad About Mu publication has been selected for a Crown Award in by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Co-Editors for the 2013-14 publication were Elizabeth Terry-Kantor, Zachariah Lee and Susan Zollinger.

The Rockland County January 2015 Math League results are as follows: Arjun Sharma earned First Place with a perfect score on all six contest questions. Second place was share by Kevin Jiang, Ryan McCormick, Zachariah Lee. Juliette Speckenbach and Erin McGuire assisted Math League Advisor Charles Lee in administering and scoring the contest questions.

The January American Scholastic Mathematics Association (ASMA) monthly contest high scorers were: Zachariah Lee and Aakash Parikh shared first first place with John Kim and Leon Lei in second place.

Mary Ann Gavioli attended a district Mathematics Supervisors meeting to plan integrating Common Core into the mathematics curriculum at Clarkstown South HS.

Two South teams competed in the 2014 National High School Math Modeling Contest. Kevin Jiang, Leon Lei, Christopher Cherian and Arjun Sharma were designated as Meritorious for their solution paper, while Piers Kwan, Daniel Sakhnovskiy, Alexander Lam and Zachariah Lee earned an Honorable Mention rating for their solution. Teams worked for 36 consecutive hours to develop a solution paper to a real-life problem using math modeling techniques involving higher mathematics, statistics and computer science. South students competed with international teams in this contest. Faculty Advisor is Dr. Mary Ann Gavioli.

Mathematics teacher Diana Colgan gave birth to triplets on January 22, 2015.

Geometry teachers Kerry Krychear, Michael Ludwig, Suzanne Pritts and Maura Wright continue to integrate common core geometry into their curriculum.

Mathematics research papers completed by students enrolled in honors mathematics classes taught by Meagan Bechard, Mary Ann Gavioli, Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts were submitted to the Greater New York Metropolitan Mathematics Fair for review and acceptance for the March 29, 2015 competition.

CLARKSTOWN SOUTH HS December 2014

Members of the Mathematics Department donated money in lieu of a holiday grab bag to the Wounded Warrior Project. Paula Shaffsick initiated this concept one year ago. Juliette Speckenbach coordinated the departmental initiative this year.

Kevin Jiang was the high scorer on the December American Scholastic Mathematics Association contest with a perfect score. Justin Mathew and Arjun Sharma tied for second place.

The Annual Edible Math Contest was held after school on December 16, 2014. Mathematics teachers judged each entry and determined the winners to be as follows: Leon Lei in First Place for his Math Cinnamon Origami Crisps. Adam Schwartz, Kishan Patel and Maeve Riley collaborated to create an Integral Cake Revolution about the Y-Axis. An Application of the Golden Ratio Cake won third place for Kaitlyn Campbell and Tiara Roy. Honorable Mention awards were given to Amanda Taylor and Catherine Michie for their Life of a Clarkstown Math Student designed Cake and Cindi Li and Christina An for their Poker Chips cake. Results of the November and December Rockland County Math League contests are: November Math League contests were administered and scored by Meagan Bechard and Erin McGuire. First place was shared by Kevin Feng, Piers Kwan, Leon Lei and Kexin Xie. Second place scorers were Zachariah Lee Kevin Jiang and Jenna Needleman. December contest questions were scored by Meagan Bechard, Erin McGuire and Juliette Speckenbach. Kevin Jiang earned first place with second place scorers Leon Lei, Kishan Patel, Arjun Sharma and Ryan McCormick. Charles Lee is the Math League advisor for South High School.

Students in math classes taught by Meagan Bechard, Mary Ann Gavioli, John Guarino, Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts are submitting their applications in the Greater New York Metropolitan Math Fair.

Students in George Engel and Mary Ann Gavioli’s College Calculus Honors are submitting registrations for college credit through SUNY at Albany.

Eric DiNome joins the South High School Mathematics Department as a leave replacement for Diana Colgan while she is on maternity leave.

South students are submitting applications for acceptance into the South High School Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Mathematics Honor Society. Faculty advisor is Mary Ann Gavioli.

CLARKSTOWN SOUTH HS November 2014

Geometry Teachers Kerry Krychear, Michael Ludwig, Suzanne Pritts and Maura Wright attended a Viking Institute on November 19th to continue implementing the Common Core Geometry curriculum into planning.

The 18th Annual Math Scavenger Hunt was held on October 27, 2014. Fifth grade students from Bardonia and Laurel Plains Elementary Schools competed in the after-school activity. South students also competed in the high-school level of the scavenger hunt. Winner along Path A were: Kevin Xie and Dan Sakhnovskiy with 2nd Place tied by teams Adam Schwartz and Kishan Patel and Zach Lee and Jay Gala. The Path B winners were Waseem Khan and Leon Lei in first place with Sharon Ra and Jayeun Kim finishing in second place.

Winners of the November American Scholastic Mathematics Association contest were: First Place winners earning a perfect score, solving seven of seven problems correctly: Chris Cherian, Kevin Jiang, Zacharish Lee, Aakash Parikh, Arjun Sharma. Leon Lei and Justin Mathew shared second place by correcylt solving six of the seven contest questions.

Students in Honors mathematics classes taught by Meagan Bechard, Mary Ann Gavioli, John Guarino, Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts are completing their mathematics research papers for submission to the Greater Metropolitan New York Math Fair.

South students will be completing applications for admission into Mu Alpha Theta, the national Mathematics Honor Society. The induction ceremony is scheduled for March 4, 2015. Guest speaker will be Dr. Olga Grant, a South Mu Alpha Theta alumnus.

Bruce Nickels is preparing his Algebra 2/Trig classes for the January 29, 2015 Regents Exam for students to candidate for an Advanced Regents Diploma.

Meagan Bechard, Bruce Nickels and Juliette Speckenbach continue to collaborate in planning lessons and computer projects for the Algebra2/Trig classes they teach at South HS.

Two South teams competed in the 2014 National High School Mathematics Modeling Contest, expending 36 continuous hours in developing a solution to a math modeling problem. Team members Christopher Cherian, Kevin Jiang, Leon Lei and Arjun Sharma worked together while Piers Kwan, Zachariah Lee, Alexander Lam and Daniel Sakhnovskiy developed a team solution for optimizing train schedules and movement of passengers.

The November 2014 Rockland County Mathematics League was held on November 17, 2014 with refreshments organized by Sharon Ra and Jayeun Kim. Meagan Bechard and Erin McGuire assisted Math League advisor Charles Lee in scoring the individual math league contest problems.

Geometry Teachers Kerry Krychear Michael Ludwig, Suzanne Pritts and Maura Wright

collaborated on the new Common Core Geometry on October 1, 2014 at a Viking Institute.

The first monthly American Scholastic Mathematics Association (ASMA) was held in October at South High School. High Scorer was Zachariah Lee with a perfect score and second place captured by Leon Lei and Arjun Sharma.

Math teachers Michael Ludwig and Stephanie Ludwig welcomed a baby boy, Jack Michael on October 9, 2014.

Diana Colgan, Mary Ann Gavioli, John Guarino, Kerry Krychear and Charles Lee met with North and Felix Festa math teachers together with Michael St. John, Secondary Education Coordinator to analyze June 2014 Common Core Regents results and discuss best practices.

The first Rockland County Mathematics League was held after school on October 20, 2014 at South High School. Cupcakes were baked by Sharon Ra and Jayeun Kim with frosting supervised by teacher Trish Donaldson in the South cooking classes. High scorer for the math meet was Zachariah Lee with second place shared by Leon Lei, Arjun Sharma, Kevin Jiang, Kevin Feng and Wenlu Zheng. South teachers Meagan Bechard, Erin McGuire, Juliette Speckenbach assisted Math League Advisor in scoring math contest solutions.

Students in Honors math classes taught by Meagan Bechard, Mary Ann Gavioli, John Guarino, Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts are completing their mathematics research papers.

Hannah Krivelivich was the Winner of the Problem Challenge#4. The National Problem Challenge is coordinated by teacher Suzanne Pritts.

Students in College Calculus classes taught by George Engel and Mary Ann Gavioli as computer science classes taught by Bruce Nickels are registering for SUNY at Albany college credits for their classes at South High School.

Clarkstown South HS students earned recognition in the 2014 American Statistical Society Poster Contest. Jonathan Rotbard and Hannah Buckler won 2nd and 3rd Place Regional awards respectively with Michael Tagaris and Anjali Thakkar earning Honorable Mention Regional Awards. Kerry Krychear and Suzanne Pritts are the classroom teachers for the statistical contest.

South teachers Diana Colgan, Kerry Krychear and Stephanie Ludwig integrated additional resources for the Common Core Algebra curriculum during a summer 2014 curriculum project.

Common Core algebra students will be using an E-text again this year under the guidance of Algebra teachers Diana Colgan, John Guarino, Kerry Krychear, Charles Lee and Erin McGuire.

Kerry Krychear completed the Common Core Algebra Curriculum Mapping for South HS during August 2014.

Suzanne Pritts has posted the first Problem Challenge for South students to solve.

South students are designing posters for the Annual New York State Association of Mathematics Teachers Poster Contest using the contest theme “Dig Into Math”.

Erin McGuire and Denise Gilroy are Co-teaching Common Core Algebra 1A while Diana Colgan and Jackie Hurley are co-teaching Common Core Algebra 1B as well as Diana Colgan and Erin McGuire are co-teaching a section of Common Core Algebra 1B at South HS.

Paula Shaffsick will be assisting with academic intervention services and academic software in the Achievement Center at South HS this academic year.

Paula Shaffsick and George Engel will be participating in the South HS Building Professional Development Team.

Bruce Nickels completed the AP Computer Science Case Study for his summer curriculum project.
