Course Information

Ms. Safdie teaches Art 1, Advanced Art (Art 2, 3, 4), AP Studio Art, and Photography. There is a separate webpage for each class containing class related information and documents.

Art 1

Art 1 is an introductory course for students with and without art experience. Students learn drawing and painting skills. In addition, students do some three-dimensional projects and work with clay.

Advanced Art (2-3-4)

Advanced Art  builds on the skills developed in Art 1. Students may take this class at multiple levels (Art 2, Art 3, and Art 4). Students build a portfolio and have an opportunity to participate in competitions. Students should complete Art 1 before enrolling in Advanced Art.

AP Studio Art

AP Art is offered for both Studio Art 2-D and Studio Art Drawing. Students have the opportunity to earn college credit by completing and submitting a portfolio of 24 pieces of art. It is recommended that students enroll in art both fall and spring semesters in order to complete the requirements for the AP portfolio. Students should complete Art 1 and an Advanced Art class before enrolling in AP art.

Photography

Photography is course that teaches photography basics as well as digital photo editing skills. This class can be taken as a prerequisite for the AP Studio Art 2-D Design class.

Events

We regularly participate in several events. 

Pioneer Days

In August advanced Art students will enter work to be displayed during Pioneer Days at the Community Complex.

Field Trip to the Appalachian Center for Craft

We hope to attend the Focus on Fine Craft Program at the Appalachian Center for Craft. This is part of the art department of Tennessee Tech University. It is located near Smithville, TN.

East Tennessee Regional Art Competion

Fourteen students will have their art selected to be shown at the Knoxville Museum of Art during December. 

The Reba Bacon Memorial High School Art Competition

The Cumberland Art Society in Cookeville, TN hosts this regional art competition every March. Work submitted for the competition is displayed for a month at the center.  The work will be displayed in the Cumberland Art Society Gallery for the rest of the month.

Roane State Academic Festival

Roane State Community College holds an annual competition for high school students in the RSCC area.  It is held at the main campus in Harriman, TN. Advanced and AP Art students will exhibit work in this competition. This year it will be on Wednesday, April 18.

Governor School for the Arts....

This is an opportunity to study art for a month during the summer at Middle Tennessee State University. It is open to Sophomores and Juniors. It is competitive and requires a portfolio review as part of the application process. The deadline for Governor School Applications for the Arts is in early November. Congressional Competition

Three students from Stone Memorial High School are finalists in the Congressional Art Competition. There are a total of six finalists. The other three are from other counties.


The first place artwork will be hung in Washington, DC for a year. The second and third place artworks will be hung in the local Congressional offices. Please help our students to become winners.
