Novel Studies
My Side of the Mountain 
Julie of the Wolves 
Both novels were written by Jean Craighead George
  • Books by her that I have read and recommend:  
    • A few of my favorites have been My Side of the Mountain, On the Far Side of the Mountain, Frightful's Mountain, Sand Castle Island, One Day in the Tropical Rainforest, Julie of the Wolves, Julie, Julie's Wolfpack, and Pocket Guide to the Outdoors -- based on My Side of the Mountain
    • Actually, I highly recommend you read ANYTHING by this author.
    • Here's an alphabetical list of her works: 
Students will be required to make personal goals in order to participate in reward celebrations. 
Students will be required to read one non-fiction book every other week (TOTAL OF 4 for the 9 weeks) and complete the online quiz for at least 3 of the 4 (Student Choice). 
Students will be required to complete the following graphic organizer for TWO of the books. 

Students will complete a novel study of Pam Munoz Ryan's Esperanza Rising. 
  • Students will learn about the author and explore the setting through multiple non-fiction texts:
    • Great Depression, Dust Bowl, Mexican Revolution, Migrant Camps, Agricultural Areas of California

Novel Studies
The Top 10 Ways to Ruin the First Day of School by Ken Derby
Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher

Word Work:
  • Plot -- exposition, setting, characters, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution/denouement 
  • 12 Powerful Words -- compare, contrast, formulate, evaluate, predict, summarize, analyze
  • epilogue, synopsis
  • Character -- characterization, character traits, protagonist/antagonist, dynamic (round)/static (flat) characters
  • Sequence
  • Paraphrase vs. Cite
  • Elaborate
RTI -- During the first part of the nine weeks, we thoroughly enjoyed reading Roald Dahl's Matilda.
During the second half, we explored Pam Munoz Ryan's novel Riding Freedom, as well as the time period in which the novel is set. We also read tons of non-fiction texts about women who have changed history.
