Bridge Math

Hello, my name is Brian Parker.   I have finished eleven years of teaching math and coaching wrestling at Stone Memorial High School.   I spent ten years as an assistant coach at Cumberland County High School before making the move to SMHS as the head coach.
I am a 1990 graduate of Hixson High School in Chattanooga, which has a strong tradition in wrestling including a Region championship and ninth place state ranking during my senior year.   I graduated from Tennessee Tech University with BS in Industrial Engineering in 1996.  After spending time as an engineer and volunteering as a wrestling coach, I decided to make teaching and coaching my full time career.   I received my Secondary Math Certification in 1999 and started my teaching career at Cumberland County High School.   Since then I have earned a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and an Educational Specialist Degree in Instructional Leadership.   I have completed 18 years of teaching and have never regretted the decision to give up my career in engineering.   I have been married to my beautiful wife, Lisa, for eight years.   She teaches Kindergarten at Brown Elementary.   We gave birth to our first child, Matthew, in 2011 and our second child, Emily, in 2015.
I have two passions, teaching math and coaching wrestling.   I believe that everyone has the ability to learn math; some people just have to work a little harder than others to achieve understanding.  Math teaches us problem solving skills that we do not learn in other areas of study.   So when are we gonna use this? - EVERYDAY!   I believe that the sport of wrestling provides young people with the determination, self-discipline, and mental and physical toughness to conquer any obstacle that confronts them in their future.   I believe that everyone should try wrestling once to test his/her toughness and grit.   It is like wrestling legend Dan Gable says, “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”

Lesson plans, Standards, and the Syllabus(Class Information) for each of my classes may be found to the left.  The SMHS Wrestling pages can also be found to the left.
