CCSA is happy to announce that all Winter 2010/11 program participants are in London and fully immersed in program activities at this time.
While it took a few days for some faculty and students to arrive, due to a multitude of travel delays caused by the widely reported winter weather emergency along the East Coast, all participants of the CCSA winter program have now arrived safely and are fully immersed in class activities.
To all CCSA participants on the London and London/Dublin 2010-11 Winter Programs:
Many of you may have seen news coverage of the winter weather going on in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the rest of Europe. Heathrow airport has been in the news a lot with a backlog of travelers left stranded from canceled flights. What is not being reported is that other than initial brief closures last weekend, there has been little disruption to incoming UK flights. Flights have been arriving at Heathrow regularly.
Therefore nothing has changed with your travel day plans: follow the instructions that you received from CCSA.
If weather conditions change in the US or UK, current airline policy is to request passengers to show up as normal to travel, even if their destination or transit airport is closed, as the airlines will be working to get travelers to a trans-Atlantic departure city so flights can be sent as soon as airports open. Consequently, you should all report to your respective airports at the time designated in your instructions. We will notify you if conditions change dramatically.
If you have an issue getting to your departure airport on the day of travel, please contact Amie Sistad, CCSA's airline coordinator, at 615-460-6574 to inform her of your situation.
CCSA wishes you a Merry Christmas and looks forward to seeing you on this winter's programs! See you soon!!
CCSA is aware of the civil disturbances taking place in London which are due primarily to a political policy change in the UK decreasing the level of government support for higher education.
We are monitoring the situation carefully: Scotland Yard has issued assurances that London is safe, and we have also discussed the situation with individuals in London whom CCSA has long term working relationships.
CCSA will discuss security and procedures at great length with students when they first arrive in London for the upcoming winter programs.
CCSA is working hard keep abreast of the situation and to determine what events, if any, may be going on while students are there and discuss with them what to do and where not to go if more protests are expected.

To all CCSA participants traveling to Great
Britain and Ireland this Summer,
Many of you have been contacting CCSA about the
Icelandic volcano eruptions and resulting ash cloud, causing airports across
Europe to periodically close. We have been monitoring the situation
continuously over the last month and will continue to do so. Should the
situation near a program travel date, we will update program leaders,
participants, and CCSA campus representatives.
Currently all airlines are asking travelers to show
up and travel as normal, even if the destination airport in Europe is closed.
It is imperative that travelers get to the trans-Atlantic departure city so
flights can be sent as soon as airports open. Consequently,
you should all report to your respective airports at the time designated in
your final letter/email you will receive from us shortly. Please make every
effort to be on time, even early if possible.

Dear Early Ireland Participants,
I am sure that you have heard on the news about the closures of the Dublin airport over the weekend due to the Iceland volcanic ash plume. We have been monitoring the situation continuously over the weekend. This morning, the Dublin airport reopened, as strong winds are blowing the cloud out of UK airspace. For those of you traveling with the CCSA group, our transatlantic flight on Delta out of Atlanta, to which all of you are connecting, is showing on the Delta website as departing as scheduled this evening.
Consequently, you should all report to your respective airports at the time designated in your final letter/email from us. Please make every effort to be on time, even early if possible.
CCSA staff are in the office, ready to answer phone calls and monitoring the situation. Should you experience difficulty reaching the airport, please call the CCSA office number at 1-800-319-6015, as we have contact information for faculty at the airport.
To quote the Irish blessing, may the wind be always at your back, blowing the ash far away.
