    In Spanish the linguistic skills of listening and speaking are practiced through four themes. The goal is for students to communicate in the language at the survival level in such basic language functions as talking about school, ways of getting around, oneself, one’s family, holidays and leisure activities. Integrations from math, science and social studies are included as appropriate. By the end of the year, students can ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements, and maintain a short conversation in a highly restricted manner. Their vocabulary is adequate to express elementary needs. As much as possible, the class is conducted in the target language.
