Winterpock Weekly Update 9/9/18

posted Sep 9, 2018, 3:17 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! WOW! It was just wonderful to have your children back at school last week! They were definitely the bright spots of our days! Mrs. Malcolm, Ms. Parnell, and I are excited to begin our 30 minute classroom meetings this week with grades 2 and 3! Follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal) to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout the week! We look forward to a terrific week two of school with your children!

***Disclaimer: There is a lot of information about Transportation in the beginning of this email! Please read to the end of this email to see other important information from the school and the PTA!***

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*Student Profile Sheets: These were sent home last Tuesday. We want to ensure that we have the most accurate and up-to-date information. These profile sheets are printed from our information system, so you will be able to see if your address, phone number, email, etc. are correct. Please look over the form and make any corrections. If there are no changes, please write NONE on the sheet. If you haven’t already, please return this sheet to school on or before Friday, September 14th. Thank you!

*Change in Child’s Afternoon Transportation: If there is a change in your child’s afternoon transportation, please send a written note to his/her teacher. (We would love for you to use the attached WPES Transportation Note! There are two notes per page. You only need to send one. Please cut the note down the center vertically and send in the entire “half sheet,” so we can see your child’s name, etc.) Notes will be sent to the office in our daily classroom folders. If an emergency arises during the day and you need to make a change to afternoon transportation, please call the office at (804) 763-5051. (I worry that a teacher may not receive an email prior to dismissal and want to ensure that all children arrive home safely!) We kindly ask that you please do not make changes after 3:15 p.m. Again, this will help us get everyone to the correct place! IMPORTANT: Please inform your child’s daycare if there will be a change in the afternoon! Many thanks! WPES Transportation Change Note for Parents.pdf

*Car Rider (Gym) versus Parent Pick Up (Office): We have students that are daily or consistent car riders. These families have assigned numbers. Students with car numbers go to the gym at dismissal. If you decide to walk to school or park to pick up your car rider that has a number tag, please wait outside of the “outside” gym doors. A staff member will assist you. We were able to have the car loop completed by4:07 p.m. on Friday! WOOHOO! (Our goal is 4:00 p.m. We will get there!)

Last week, we had approximately 90 families go to the office daily to sign out their children for Parent Pick Up in the Office. (We understand that many of these changes in transportation were due to late buses and appreciate that you notified the school prior to 3:15 p.m. when you could!) As you can imagine this is overwhelming for you and the office as we try to safely ensure that each student gets to the correct place! If you are picking up your child from the office at dismissal, we ask that you do not sign him/her out until 3:45 p.m. Also, please do not just take your child from the hallway and leave. We must safely account for all children! ;) If you realize that daily pick up is the best option for your family, please contact the school office. We will gladly assign you a car number tag to help things go smoother! Then, you can stay in your car and your child will be brought to you!

*Transportation Communication Update: Thank you so much for all of the support that you have given our staff as we work to perfect the things that we can control with transportation! We have implemented new procedures to ensure that school buses are not blocked from entering the bus loop in the afternoon. Several teachers and staff members are volunteering and serving extra “other duties as assigned” to help expedite what we can! I will continue to communicate Transportation Updates via Twitter as this will provide you with information in real time. You do not have to set up a Twitter account to see these updates. You can access my Twitter account via the school website by clicking on the School Information Tab and selecting @WPESPrincipal Twitter. We hope to have this feed added to the front page of the website on Monday! This will allow you to simply bookmark the school website for easy access! See more information about arrival and dismissal below…

*Here are a few things that you can do to help us continue to have an efficient and safe arrival and dismissal:

Arrival:
  • No students should enter the school prior to 9:05 a.m. At 9:05 a.m., students will go to the cafeteria where adults will monitor them until they head to class when the bell rings at 9:10 a.m.
  • In the morning, please pull all the way around the car loop to the third sign that states “Student Drop Off Starts Here.” We will unload approximately 12-14 cars at one time, and then wave you around. (Please do not let your children out of your vehicle until 9:05 a.m. when adults are in place to assist you.)
  • Please do not get out of your vehicle. Staff members will be on the car loop to open doors and assist your children.
  • There will be a sign at the median where the buses turn to access the bus loop (next to the baseball field) that asks you to stop there if the car loop is full. Once the car loop is full in the morning, we are asking you to wait at this sign if you are dropping off your child. This will allow cars needing to access the parking lot before 9:05 a.m. to use the left turn lane to go around those of you waiting and safely access the right lane to enter one of our parking lots. Remember, we do not want anyone driving into oncoming traffic to access either parking lot! If it is past 9:05 a.m., you will need to wait in the line. Thank you so much for your help with this! This worked well last year!
  • Again, thank you again for pulling all the way around and helping us keep the line moving. If you do not pull all the way around, buses cannot access the bus loop! If you are parking in the large lot and walking your children to the front door, please walk completely around the sidewalk instead of cutting across the crosswalk. This will also help us to safely keep the car loop moving.

Dismissal:
  • At 3:45 p.m. (first bell), kindergarten students walk with their teachers to the buses. All daycare students (K-5) go to the cafeteria and all car riders (K-5) go to the gym.
  • At 3:50 p.m. (second bell), students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades students go to the buses.
  • At 3:55 p.m. (third bell), students in 4th and 5th grades go to the buses.
  • Parents that have a number for car rider pick up in the front loop should pull all the way to the “Student Drop Off Starts Here” sign. Just like the morning, once the loop is full, parents should stop at the white sign by the ball fields. (A staff member will be out to start writing down numbers at 3:40ish p.m. to help us move quickly! Please stay at the sign until you are waved on!)
  • If you need to get to the office in the afternoon to pick up your child, please plan to arrive prior to 3:45 p.m. to access the parking lot. If you arrive after 3:45ish p.m., please wait in the line. As you can see, the line has now been rerouted to the other side of Harpers Mill Parkway to allow for buses to safely enter the bus loop! Thank you so much!

*A Summer Reading Reminder from Mrs. Witham, Mrs. Robinson, & Mrs. Trimble: We have extended the deadline! Don’t forget to turn in your Summer Reading Bingo Sheet on or before Friday, September 14th! Summer Reading Bingo 2018.pdf

*Updates from the WPES Library: Our 1st-5th grade students will begin checking our books during their library times this week! Kindergarten students will begin checking out books during the week of September 17th. Students will be able to exchange books weekly during their scheduled library times. “Open Check Out” or opportunities to exchange books outside of scheduled library times will not begin until the week of October 1st. Thanks for your patience as we train a new library assistant and create a schedule that is manageable for classroom teachers and students!

*Winterpock Way “PBIS”: We are so excited to share that our whole school has adopted “Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports” and redefined our Winterpock Way! Ask your children how many “positive paws” their class has earned! They are working hard to earn classroom incentives by earning 20 positive paws. Once they earn a classroom reward, they will have a special wolf placed on their doorframe. Three wolves equals a quarterly reward that is supported by our PTA! At Winterpock, we are all focused on being kind, safe, and responsible in the classroom, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, outside at recess, and even on the school bus! Every child is involved in a classroom “Pack Meeting” daily to greet their peers, share, complete a team-building activity, and/or participate in a class message. Last year, we had a committee of teachers (led by our amazing school counselors) research many methods and determine the right fit for our school. Twenty-one teachers joined us in August to create this school-wide approach and prepare for full implementation during this school year! This will replace our monthly Core Value recognition of one student per class. Now, we can celebrate all of the children all of the time! We will share more information about our Winterpock Way with you during Back to School Nights. ;)

*Back to School Night for 2nd Grade & 3rd Grade: We look forward to seeing our 2nd and 3rd grade parents on Thursday, September 13th. When you arrive, please go directly to your child’s classroom. We will not even attempt to fit the parents of almost 350 students into the cafeteria! At 6:15 p.m., we will show a fun video to introduce our staff. Session One will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. and Session Two will begin at approximately 7:00 p.m. Back to School Night will end at 7:30 p.m. We know that parking will be a challenge. If you miss the video, do not worry! We will be posting it to our website after all Back to School Nights are complete. (Back to School Night for Grades 4 & 5 will be on September 20th and Grades K & 1 on September 27th.)

*MAP Assessments: Last year, several selected schools in CCPS piloted MAP Assessments…or Measures of Academic Progress. This year, all students in Grades 3-5 at all elementary schools in CCPS will participate. A letter will be sent home to you describing this process in more detail. Here is also a blog that you can access to read about Parent FAQs. Just wanted to give you a heads up of the assessment schedule:
  • 3rd Grade Reading MAP Assessment - Thursday, September 13th
  • 4th & 5th Grades Reading MAP Assessment - Friday, September 14th
  • 3rd Grade Math MAP Assessment - Tuesday, September 18th
  • 4th & 5th Grades Math MAP Assessment - Wednesday September 19th

*Volunteer Application: The CCPS Volunteer Application is an online application. If you or a family member plan to volunteer for a school or PTA function for the 2018-2019 school year, please go here to access the online application. This link is also available on our school website. All volunteer applications will now be screened through the CCPS Office of Safety & Security. (If you filled out the online application last spring, you are all set!)
