Winterpock Weekly Update - 9/23/18

posted Sep 23, 2018, 4:47 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! Thank you so much for ALL of the positive feedback and support that you have given us! We are so proud of our staff for keeping our students happy and safe during the inclement weather last Monday. Our students were incredible…we are proud of them too! Mrs. Malcolm, Ms. Parnell, and I were excited that we got to visit many classrooms for family meetings last week…and are looking forward to many more visits this week! Follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal) to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout the week! We look forward to a fabulous week four of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*Back to School Night: Last Thursday went very well! The following classrooms will have Back to School Night this Thursday:
Thursday, September 27th – ECSE (Phillips), ALL Kindergarten (Abell, Armstrong, Handzel, Houchens, Lehman, McNulty, Morris, Pruitt), All 1st (Adams, Beck, Carbonneau, Crouch, Davis, Ford, McCullough), a few 2nd (Cheatham, Killelea, White), and a few 3rd (Cary, Hubbard, Husick, Loucks, Majetic, Starling)

When you arrive, please go directly to your child’s classroom. We will not even attempt to fit the parents of almost 600 students into the cafeteria! At 6:15 p.m., we will show a video to introduce our staff in your child’s classroom. Session One will begin at 6:30 p.m., Session Two will begin at 6:55 p.m., and Session Three will begin at 7:20 p.m. Back to School Night will end at 7:45 p.m. We know that parking will be a challenge. If you miss the video, do not worry! We will be posting it to our website after all Back to School Nights are complete. Thanks for carpooling, walking, coming to a later session…whatever you can do to help us fit!

*Safety Drills: We wanted to let you know that we have several safety drills planned throughout the school year. In September, we are required to have two Fire Drills (this used to be four) and two Lock-Down Drills. We were not anticipating having a Tornado Drill until after October 1st, but have checked it off of the list after last Monday’s “unplanned” event. Again, safety drills are a common practice throughout the school year to help our students be prepared.

*Updates from the WPES Library: *We need volunteers! We are looking for parents and grandparents to assist us in the library on a daily basis. This is a fun and relaxing way to volunteer and get to know the students. There are many tasks, such as filing books and straightening shelves, which need to be done daily. If you are interested in volunteering on a weekly basis, please consider coming into the library! You can spend an hour with us, a morning, or an afternoon! If interested please email Mrs. Witham (tami_witham@ccpsnet.net) or Mrs. Robinson (jessica_robinson@ccpsnet.net) for a library schedule in order to find the best volunteer time-slot for you! *Birthday Book Club is back! The library is excited to announce the return of the Birthday Book Club! Letters are being sent home explaining it more in detail. If you would like to sign your child up to come to the library for a birthday celebration, a birthday treat, and be the first to check out a brand new book of their choice, fill out the form and send it in with your $15 donation! Thank you for your continued support!

*Transportation Communication Update: We have implemented new procedures to ensure that school buses are not blocked from entering the bus loop in the morning and afternoon. Thanks for continuing to drive down Harpers Mill Parkway and U-turning to access the car line once Elementary Way Loop is full in the mornings and afternoons! This saves precious time and allows our buses to enter the school safely! Remember, you must U-turn and wait in this line after 9:05 a.m. and after 3:45 p.m. Thank you also for not blocking streets or entrances to neighborhoods. We appreciate it! I will continue to communicate Transportation Updates via Twitter as this will provide you with information in real time. My Twitter feed (@WPESPrincipal) is now on the main page of our school website!

*MSiC Enrichment Programs: See the attached flyers for information on “Little Innovators” (Grades K-3) and “Discoverers” (Grades 4-5). These are additional opportunities for your children to explore STEM! MSiC Little Innovators Brochure Fall_2018.pdf MSiC Discoverers Brochure Fall_2018.pdf
