Winterpock Weekly Update - 9/10/17

Hi Winterpock Families!
We had an AMAZING first week of school! If you follow me on Twitter, @WPESPrincipal, you can see that I had fun reading to Mrs. Jonkers’ Kindergartners, dancing with Ms. Todd’s first graders during a brain break, participating in a “Get to Know You” activity with Mrs. Starling’s third graders, and engaging with Mrs.Iwanski’s fourth graders during problem solving in math. Mrs. Bare, Mrs. Malcolm, and I briefly visited every classroom throughout the first week and look forward to leading 30-minute “Family Meetings” in each classroom over the next three weeks. We are excited about week two with your children!

Here is the weekly update:

*Information about Arrival & Dismissal: Thanks to all of you for your patience as we figured out how to meet the needs of all students during this past week! We dismissed at 3:27 p.m. on the first day of school…and 3:04 p.m. on the fourth day of school…a huge improvement! Here are a few things that you can do to help us continue to have an efficient and safe arrival and dismissal:
  • In the morning, please pull all the way around the car loop. (You will most likely see me standing and waving at a sign!) We will unload approximately ten cars at one time, and then wave you around. Thank you again for pulling all the way around and helping us keep the line moving. If you do not pull all the way around, buses cannot access the bus loop! If you are parking in the lot and walking your children to the front door, please walk around the sidewalk instead of cutting across the crosswalk. This will also help us to safely keep the car loop moving.
  • If there is a change in your child’s afternoon transportation, please send a written note to his/her teacher. Notes will be sent to the office in our daily classroom folders. If an emergency arises during the day and you need to make a change to afternoon transportation, please call the office at (804) 763-5051. I worry that a teacher may not receive an email prior to dismissal and want to ensure that all children arrive home safely!

*Winterpock Reading Challenge: Join the Wolfpack Reading Challenge! We challenge each student to read for 10 minutes per day during the first 100 days of school! Students that reach 1,000 minutes in 100 days will receive a “Reading Spirit Stick” from the PTA. Top readers in each classroom will actually get to duct tape Mrs. Dubiel to the wall if we reach one million minutes in 100 days! (Of course, we will video tape this for all of you to view!) How many minutes do you think we can read in 100 days? You should have received the “recording sheet” in your child’s folder on the first day of school. UPDATE: Recording Sheets are due each Monday…not Friday. Please write the total number of minutes read in the “total minutes” column and initial. Teachers will log total minutes into our school spreadsheet on Mondays. I’ll update you next Sunday on the total number of minutes read during week one!

*A Summer Reading Reminder from Mrs. Witham & Mrs. Trimble: Deadline EXTENDED: Summer Reading Sheets are now due Friday, September 15th! You can access the forms by clicking on this link: Summer Reading Information Announcement.

*Back to School Night for 2nd Grade & 3rd Grade: We look forward to seeing our second and third grade parents on Thursday, September 14th. When you arrive, please go directly to your child’s classroom. We will not even attempt to fit the parents of almost 350 students into the cafeteria! At 6:15 p.m., we will show a fun video to introduce our staff. Session One will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. and Session Two will begin at approximately 7:00 p.m. Back to School Night will end at 7:30 p.m. We know that parking will be a challenge. If you miss the video, do not worry! We will be posting it to our website after all Back to School Nights are complete. (Back to School Night for Grades 4 & 5 will be on September 27th and Grades K & 1 on September 28th.)

*Café Sign-up: We are excited to see that we already have parents signed up! Beginning our third week of school, we would love to have parent volunteers assist during lunchtime. Please go here to sign up. (Click on “sign up” to access the “SignUpGenius” link.) If you would like to assist during lunchtime, please pick up a volunteer form from the office.

*Military Status and Impact Aid Survey: CCPS sent out an email on August 22nd followed by a reminder on August 31st requesting for parents to submit a quick survey. (Click on “survey” to access the link.) Thanks for your help!

*A future event: “Join Scouting Night” for Cub Scouts will be on Wednesday, September 20th from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Leaders from the Cub Scouts will visit classrooms on Tuesday, September 19th and information will be sent home.
