Winterpock Weekly Update - 3/4/18

posted Mar 4, 2018, 3:11 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! I guess you can say that March is definitely coming in like a lion with these windy conditions! Last week, we had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss! Our Wolfpack had fun participating in the daily events, and our Kindergartners enjoyed their interactive read aloud with Mr. Thompson, our School Board Member, on Friday. Follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal) to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout the week! You will also see that Mr. Baytop received an ActiveRVA Award on behalf of our school, and Mrs. Prymak received an Innovative Teacher Award with $500 to purchase more “bots” for our STEAM Lab! WOOHOO! We look forward to a phenomenal week twenty-five of school with your children!

*Winterpock’s 10th Birthday Party: We will celebrate Winterpock’s 10th birthday with a school-wide party on Friday, March 9th in the afternoon. Many thanks to our PTA for providing party hats, party blowers, and pencils for each student! We will have a “parade” of our founding teachers and previous principals before we sing together and play a game as a school. It will be much fun! Mr. Thompson, our School Board Representative, is providing a small vanilla cupcake with white icing and blue sprinkles from Ukrop’s Bakery for each student! The ingredients label is attached. Parents, please let your child’s teacher know if you would like for them to be opted out of this treat. Although the actual cupcakes are peanut and tree nut free, there is a disclaimer that “tree nuts are used in the production of other products.” We selected Ukrop’s because we knew that this was a bakery that you would know! We welcome for you to send in an alternate treat for your child to enjoy during this celebration! Ukrop's Cupcakes Ingredients.pdf

*Women’s History Month: March is Women’s History Month. We will share interesting facts about our “Wonderful Women in History” during the announcements on Wednesdays. Classroom teachers have also been provided with lesson ideas from CCPS and VDOE.

*National Nutrition Month & National School Breakfast Week: March is also National Nutrition Month! Winterpock Elementary, along with the rest of CCPS will participate in National School Breakfast Week from Monday, March 5th through Friday, March 9th. It is a week to highlight and celebrate the benefits of breakfast and the opportunity for all of our students to receive a healthy meal at the start of their day. Fueling up at breakfast can boost attention, concentration, and memory, all of which helps our students in and out of the classroom. Lots of fun activities planned for this week include an opportunity to win a raffle prize for students that eat breakfast. Two students will each receive an Emoji backpack full of sports items! *Kiwanis “K-Kids” Update: On February 26th, the K-Kids kicked off their Shamrock fundraiser to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They met Ben, a Winterpock first grader, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. They also heard from Emily Withers, the fundraising coordinator from the MDA of Greater Richmond. Miss Withers told the K-Kids about what the organization does to help people in our community. A flyer will come home this week. Help our K-Kids cover the halls in shamrocks! Please also continue to collect and send in aluminum can tabs to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond! The next K-Kids meeting is on Monday, March 26th from3:00-3:45 p.m.

The proceeds from River Jam will benefit the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation, which builds programs for teenage sufferers of mental illness and provides resources for suicide prevention. Your support of River Jam will directly impact the youth in our Chesterfield community by providing students with coping mechanisms, creating a positive campus culture, and Speaking Up about mental health.
