Winterpock Weekly Update - 2/18/18

posted Feb 18, 2018, 3:22 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! I hope you are enjoying a relaxing weekend with your family! Last week was a week of kindness, love, hard work, and celebration at Winterpock! Our students participated in many kindness activities including “chalking the school” with inspiring pictures and messages, we surpassed our Jump Rope for Heart goal, our K Kids completed their Heart Gram sales, our 3rd graders spread the love during their visits to local nursing homes, our 2nd graders launched their t-shirt sales for Down Syndrome Awareness, our office manager, Mrs. Hudgins, was commended for another perfect audit, our STEAM teachers mastered the 3-D printer, and Mrs. Malcolm was named our Assistant Principal for the 2018-2019 school year! Follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal) to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout the week! We look forward to a fabulous week twenty-three of school with your children!

Here is the weekly update:

*Monday, February 19th is a FULL Day of School: Here is a message from CCPS: While the survey was administered, we continued to look at other options for providing additional instructional time. After conversations with the Virginia Department of Education, we are considering an innovative solution that could help us meet the state requirement for instructional hours and (with no more missed time) potentially restore the final half day in June. We will NOT start adding five minutes to the school day on Feb. 19th, as discussed in the survey. We will, however, have an update within the next two weeks about our conversations with the state.

*1st Grade Musical: The 1st Grade Musical will be on Friday, February 23rd at 9:00 a.m. Look for more information from Mrs. Hamlin, Mr. Smalls, and your child’s classroom teacher.

*Jump Rope for Heart: Way to go, Wolfpack! Our goal was to raise $20,000! So far, we have raised $26,601.25! WOW! We are proud to support the American Heart Association! Thank you so much for your generosity!

*Celebrating Black History Month: During the month of February, we will honor the achievements and contributions made by African Americans on the morning announcements. Please ask your child to share with you what they learn! Also, teachers have been provided with resources for their classrooms from the Virginia Department of Education.

Rising 6th Grade Night at BBMS: Bailey Bridge Middle School will host their annual VIB Night (Rising 6th Grade Parent Night) on Thursday, February 22nd from *6:30-8:00 p.m. with a snow date of March 1st. *This is the time that is listed on their school website.

*Winterpock Reading Challenge: During Week Twenty-One, we read 49,749 minutes! Our unofficial total after twenty-one weeks is 1,579,339 minutes read as a school! Final Reading Logs are due tomorrow, Monday, February 19th! Remember, Spirit Sticks will be awarded to students that read 1,000 (or more) minutes during the entire Reading Challenge. They will receive these on Friday. I will be duct taped to the wall on Friday, February 23rd by the top 3 readers in each classroom! Our plan is to have all students that met the challenge of 1,000 minutes watch as we have a K-2 assembly and 3-5 assembly to tape me to the wall! Stay tuned!

*Family “ThinkFun” Game Night RSVP: Please go here to let us know if you plan to attend our “ThinkFun” Game Night on Thursday, March 15th. We would love to have your response on or before Friday, February 23rd, so we can determine whether we need to have one or two sessions that evening. Thank you!

*K-Kids Update: Our K-Kids are continuing to collect aluminum can tabs to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond! Thank you for supporting the Heart Grams sale! We raised $800 for Mended Little Hearts! This organization will attend our next K Kids meeting on Monday, February 26th to receive the donation and share about their efforts. Thanks for your generous support!

*Cosby High School Band Booster Shoe Drive: The Cosby High School Band is very thankful for our support of their Shoe Drive! The CHS Band Boosters are collecting new and gently-used shoes of all sizes to raise funds for their CHS band programs. A collection box for donated shoes will be placed in the front hallway by the office. Collected shoes are used to support micro-enterprise vendors. Micro-enterprises are small businesses in developing nations. Let’s support the CHS band programs by cleaning out our closets and donating our gently worn, used, and new shoes. This shoe drive fundraiser will continue until March 2nd. Their goal is to collect 2500 pairs of shoes! They greatly appreciate being able to put a collection box at Winterpock! Go Titans!
